Here's something that's always made me curious..

Why is it that people from the US never say "American" when asked about their nationality? They always refer to their family's historical linage. This seems strange to me since America as a whole seems to have a great deal of national pride, certainly more than here in the UK.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
