I agree, remember what he said about Dream Theater?

yes, and he was right. thats why people saying they feel Opeth isnt doing it for them is no less valid just because Mike doesnt want to hear about it. i respect mike, and his music...but people have the right to gripe as much as they do to praise.

Blackwater Park sounds nicer to me- just the sound of the instruments and those insanly nice SW harmonies. It IS horribly overcompressed, but I'd say thats a fault of mastering, not Steven Wilsons doing.

the mix of bwp is very compressed...but the guitars have a punch that they don't have on GR. I suppose that is a difference in settings on the instrument itself. the powerchords at the beginning of bleak, and especially dating back to face of melinda, have that "brown" sound, ya know, the mean crunch followed by a smooth breakup. the guitars on GR don't have quite the contrast....its especially noticeable in The Baying of the Hounds....right before the james bond part when the distorted guitar is still fading out.

but, the guitar sound has never been thicker or clearer than on GR...bonus.

who here's gonna get piss drunk when Mike A hits 100 posts. goddamnit I am..

wlel I probably will when he hits 98 posts too...and probably 99. I just hope they're lik ethis one though

I love it when a band's frontman comes on a forum and basically tells everyone to stfu.

"Opeth has run it's course"... I don't think that statement can be made unless it's made by the Ålmighty. Perhaps a thread titled, "Opeth doesn't do it for me anymore" or "I'm tired of listening to Opeth" would be more appropriate. This thread has traces of troll IMO...

DOH! I hadn't read posts in this thread in the last day or so. Sooooo..... I guess Mike didn't post his agreement on Opeth "running it's course?"

that's what I basically thought in the beginning. it really is an offensive thread title. ....good way to attract attention I guess. :erk:

Im not trying to run a campaign against your band man, I was just curios about peoples opinions on the album timelines of the past present and future. I liked Ghost Reveries better than Deliverance, I just think some of the stuff on GR is alittle basic for Opeth. Other than that man, I have seen your band live 6 times and I will not miss a show, especially with the crap metal scene here in America.

Im not getting anything from Opeth anymore, nothing new is coming from them, seems they are repeating themselves now and nothing shocking or exciting comes from them anymore, just one step down with each release.... your thoughts??

If they were to break up, I wouldn't be upset. I think they have already made their best stuff in my opinion.

:goggly: The power of celebrities...

My apologies to Mike, but while I don't think Opeth has "run its course", I do hope Opeth heads in a different direction from Ghost Reveries. I listen to all my Opeth albums repeatedly except for GR, that CD just doesn't keep my attention for long. Don't get me wrong, great sound and production and it was obvious that a lot of work went into recording it, it just didn't grow on me. That doesn't mean I'm suddenly down on Opeth because I happen to be dissapointed in an album, I just hope they return to form in the future.

it cracks me up when all these retards are so proud to claim they listen to sophisticated "progressive" death metal ala: Opeth...then bitch when the band keeps trying something new. little bit hypocritical afaict

Personally I enjoy the more progressive elements in Opeth. It was actually Opeth's collaboration with Steve Wilson that introduced me to Porcupine Tree, which I listen to quite a bit lately. I don't think it was "jazz" or "progressive" elements in GR that I didn't like, it just wasn't memorable for me, for whatever reason.

What I've really never understood about music discussions in general are comments about how a band has sold out or changed for the worse. Whose fault is that? The band for changing or the listeners tastes changing without even admitting it?

And my not understanding such discussions is strongest when discussing a band like Opeth. We're not discussing main stream pop act that, in general, has nothing to do with musical talent. I think most of us agree the members of Opeth are quite talented and gifted musicians, and the band as a unit has made remarkable music over the years. Music is about the listeners tastes and the bands choice of direction. As I've said many times before, Opeth is doing what THEY want. If you don't like it, leave. I don't think the official forum of a band is a place to come and say you suck now. There is nothing wrong with critiquing a band from your perspective.

Again, this depends in who is being discussed.
