No they do not rip opeth off, They don´t even like Opeth so there you have it, but they are good for the most part. The mantle is still sinking in altough I don´t care for the 2 minute-ish instrumentals with the two chords strumming... a bit boring if you ask me...AbsentFriend said:

i dont really even listen to opeth that much anymore. my whole "ooh opeth is everything to me in this world" faded a little while ago. they're still an excellent band, but there ARE other great bands out there as well.
Opeth burned me out a bit ... I can't listen to Average bands anymore. I love Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Tool, Emperor, Jeff Buckley, Phish (im also a bit of a deadhead I guess), and Opeth ... that is the major bands of alot of genre's .... all my friends are like " man how can you listen to these bands yet not like this and this and this" ....... I say fuck em ..... Why listen to bad music when you have such good music. My problem being when I get sick of what im listening to .... I want more, in my case it's good because Im too the point now where I can picture a type of music in my head or a feeling and just play it so that saves me .. but one day i'lll be hung from a treeAbsentFriend said:

No, but really, why has nobody mentioned another band that's better (in metal, appart from Agalloch)?
I mean Agalloch, really, they are NOT better than Opeth. I'd have to agree with this guy who doesn't like the 3 minute, 2 chord strumming. Agalloch just have a sign on their heads saying: "hey man, we wanna make long 'complex' songs in which you can feel the icecold wind blowing around your ears, while walking through a big forrest. And the leaves are also falling, do you sense that? Are we bringing that feeling across?"
Something like that.

Well now...Opeth is what threw me back into metal after my whole "Im gonna listen to grunge until i die" phase...i always loved metal but for a while i kinda didnt really delve deeply into it until about 3 years ago...i always loved Slayer, Death, Obituary, etc but when i found Opeth i came back to it all....i thank them for that....
Musically i do adore them...i find their riffing and structure to be complex yet almost barbaric at the same time...diminished chords and progressive song structure and these almost hideously haunting growls...then there was the clean vocals.......*drool* anyway...there are other bands out there...other good bands...

I completely agree with you on every word you've said! Offcourse there are really good bands out there. I really love Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Type O Negative, Iron Maiden, and I'm a big fan of the oldies (Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Testament) and even The Old Dead Tree. But for the most part, all these newer bands just suck. They all want to copy what other bands are doing, but then in a funky style or whatever. Untill this day I've never heard a better blend of music and musical styles than Opeth.

The Mantle is a great CD. I have no clue as to why you would say you *hate* it.
Maybe you're mad because the guy said they're better than Opeth (which IMO they're not), but you can't recognize good music if you say that Agalloch sucks.
From what I read, you don't like them because they try to give you a bleak feeling, but suck at doing that.
