Orchid/Morningrise

ironically they have the most repetitive drums of all the albums

yeah maybe. Anders did break any ground, or create memorable deliverance/masters apprentice-esque drum sections, but I think he excelled at invoking feeling and atmosphere, take the mid section in UTM, i think he shines there, by doing so little. The double bass kicks are standard but their great nonetheless and he times them perfectly to give the best possible climax (ex. end of in the mist and utm).

He has an interesting style, most drummers at the end of night and the silent water around mike's whispering would be wailing on the drums and cymbals, but he only maintains the steady double kick and some sparse snare and cymbal hits. I think he knew when to let mike and peter have the spotlight.

if they re-recorded orchid and morningrise, i think those albums would be accepted by more people as their best albums. imo
They are the best opeth albums by far.

Hah damn it must be just me, but the silences and changes in the earlier stuff just adds to the mood for me. And the songs seem to flow together nicely. There is somewhat of a mood change at the change bit, but it still fits with the rest of the song. Doesn't feel random AT ALL. And i think there's absolutely nothing wrong with the quality or how Mikael growled back then, it sounds great to me.

Different from the later stuff, BUT not worse. Hell right now i enjoy the overall sound of Orchid more then MAYH, quality wise. It's like something is missing in MAYH, or something i don't like that much is added. I don't know what it is. But for some reason Orchid/Morningrise stuff i don't get tired of. Some of the later stuff i can get tired of easily.

I don't think there's any reason to re-record it, unless it was a live recording. I mean, i like listening to lamentations more then damnation and deliverance. But that wouldn't happen, it's not like they're going to do an Orchid/Morningrise set hah.

the stupid sound of waves lapping up on a shore during BRI is enough to put morningrise out of my top 3 opeth albums
