Oslo bombing

Last comment on the (off)topic - Muslim no longer denotes a specific ethnic group (or race). It's like saying that Christians are all white... It seems to me that you, linking fear of Islamic fundamentalists to a fear of certain ethnic group or race (or plainly racism for that matter), are the ones showing the greatest stereotypical attitudes.
 
I know all the Muslim people in my neighborhood are trying to bomb my house. I hear them creeping in the night. They're just waiting till I have a kids birthday party to set off the explosives they've been hiding around.

Now back on topic. I was reading the newspaper at breakfast and it said that the police swat team was delayed in responding to the island attack due to their helicopter not being ready to fly. It said they were also delayed in finding boats at the shore to sail to the island.

Seems to me that there should be quick response teams of police/soldiers in the future. Norway is not a very big country. If helicopter assault teams were placed in a handful of locations around the country and worked in shifts they could respond to a terror attack much quicker.

Now as for monitoring the fertilizer that is really tough. The news paper said the attacker was renting a farm and so he had credible reason to buy fertilizer. I don't have a clue how one would prevent this.

Apparently the boat they used was too small for the load, which made it take in water and caused engine problems.

This, too, is in the book. He didn't just rent a farm, he actually started a farming business as a cover story, and had professional-looking business plan for a mining business to keep all suspicions away. He had credible cover stories for every single purchase he made. The way he had planned the attack, it would have absolutely impossible to prevent it in the planning/acquiring/manufacturing stages. Judging from the book, this isn't your everyday fanatic, he's actually a cold-blooded, very highly intelligent and systematic individual. The way he planned it all is insanely detailed.
 
Exactly as Jarkko says - the book is almost incredibly rich in details and very well premeditated instructions. He was far from a deranged fanatic, which in my eyes makes him even more dangerous. Today I thought if the whole business wasn't carried out just in order to spread the book in a very efficient way - through the media. After all, he COULD have come up with a plan to set the bomb and detonate it without anyone knowing.
Also, he registered on Facebook and Twitter a few days before the attack and (interestingly?) had no friends there, so it's probably just a presentational profile for media to feed on. If you guys peek into the book, you'll see some really dangerous guides and advice :\ Now he's probably waiting for his new "apprentices".

Do you think the attitude towards penalties in Norway will change after this? Surprisingly, I haven't heard a single voice (even from the survivors) saying "I hope this motherfucker will burn in hell" or something in that vein. That would probably be the first reaction in our country, which nicely illustrates how different are Czechs and Norwegian (sadly for us).

The book is fucking disturbing. I hope that, despite the fact that it is getting the publicity he clearly wanted it to get, not even the craziest far-righter is crazy enough to take it seriously and act upon it. If he has recruited even one more nutjob into his ridiculous little sect then his attack was successful, and that would make the whole thing even more depressing.

The bit that gets me most is all this bullshit in the book about how he will be a "proud templar" and on the day of the attack he'll be "invincible and dying a martyr" and all this stuff about building his own body armour and how to take out armed police, then he goes to an island and kills a bunch of defenceless kids. I hope he spends the rest of his life reflecting on how he failed at even the one thing that mattered to him.

Unfortunately I think he succeeded exactly the way he planned. The date was apparently chosen so that there weren't as much "civilians" (remember, he considers even the kids on the island to be enemies in the war he believes he's fighting) in the building he bombed, so he could execute the decoy explosion with minimal casualties while striking the future "enemies", the defenseless kids in the opposing political camp, while simultaneously striking their parents (who probably are in the same political camp) where it hurts the most. He didn't even attempt to fight the special forces when they arrived, so he could get a trial and thus initiate the "propaganda phase" as he calls it. It's incredibly fucked up.
 
What is the most fucked thing up about all this, is that he was virtually impossible to detect (and in the future, those kind of persons will be undetectable too). He had planned in detail everything prior to committing this slaughter. Even his pictures tell us that - he didn't want to have some everyday pics, so he even took care of his post-killing presentation. I guess he will use the trial to further the presentation.
 
This is so incredibly sad. How somebody could do something like that...it's just impossible to imagine. The point at which mass murder is justified, rationalized, necessary--how does somebody arrive at that point? That person, the murderer, is not human.

It was Alan Watts who wrote, "Reasonable--that is, human--men will always be capable of compromise, but men who have dehumanized themselves by becoming the blind worshipers of an idea or ideal are fanatics whose devotion to abstractions make them the enemies of life."

Exstremists are extremists--what their ideology actually is is irrelevant. Fuck extremists.

My heart goes out to Norway. So, so sad...

It's just sick.. how can one man (apparently) go and kill almost 100 young people / children without hesitating .. His beliefs are fucked up, this is worse than any muslim/Islamic action ever done to Norway (if any)... and probably will be forever!
 
Man so fucked up...I just don't understand. Highly intelligent and methodical guy like this, and his grand scheme is to kill.....liberals? what?
