Present Opeth Theory

the formula is that there is no formula. how can anyone say GR is most formulaic with TGC being on the album?

Mikael (and the band) makes songs out of modules - small and big.
Just keep listening closely and you will see. I haven't found any formula covering whole songs. Just parts of them.

And again, I'm not making this up either. Apart from that you obviously can hear it for yourselves (all the stuff thats played 4x, etc) Mikael has said - in many interviews - that he composes stuff in sections and later puts the parts together to songs.

The 4x riffs is used by about any band in existance, it is not a Mike signature just because he uses it alot, because alot of bands did it before, did it now and will continue doing it. The number of beats per riff is another question. Isn't the first verse riff in GOP 16 beats or something?

Perhaps this is because otherwise Opeth's music would sound like a circus with no logical structure or coherence, kind of like this forum. kthanx

...Almost every band does that. And as someone else said, in riff based music, using a section in some number other than 4 times will almost always sound forced. Saying that that's a part of Opeth's "formula" is essentially placing them in the category of riff-based music. But I guess that wasn't obvious?

he's been saying that, i know. But i think Mikael is wanting to venture out of the whole death metal thing in general. im not saying he doesnt want opeth to remain a metal band, but before ghost reveries he was saying that the new album was going top be somewhat black metal, but i think he chickened out because he thought it would be too much of a departure for the fans to handle. its kind of a bold statement, but i think it rings true, and it will on their next album.

I honestly doubt he keeps the fans in mind when he's writing music. And from what I saw, everyone liked the idea of a darker, scarier, "black metal" album. And I don't think saying he wanted to make a black metal album is a bold statement at all. And I believe that Ghost Reveries was more of a departure than anything - it's got a whole lot of prog stuff going on, in a different vein than can be seen in previous albums, especially Deliverance/Damnation. In fact, if you think about it, making a black metal album wouldn't be a departure - in that Deliverance was about their heaviest album to date. Lastly, while putting less than usual, Mikael still put growling on Ghost Reveries, and I guess following your logic, that he writes music for his fans (not for himself) he might have been trying to get out of death metal thing, but couldn't get out completely for fear of alienating fans. But I really doubt that Mikael writes his songs so that fans will like them, as opposed to him liking them.

Do you play an instrument? Do you write music? If you did, I think you'd realize that when writing a song, you write what you hear then attach a label to it - not the other way around. I think Mikael had just started liking the black metal sound, and figured with a keys player he could start trying stuff like that - but started writing and just wasn't hearing it. I don't think he had any intentions of getting the band out of a certain genre, nor of pleasing the fans, and he didn't "chicken out" either.
