Present Opeth Theory

Some real Opeth theory, for once: I took a look at the solo in The Funeral Portrait, and many of the notes (and a few off ones) seems to be taken from the natural minor scale in the key of E, which is weird, since Opeth are the typical 'don't-know-any-scales'-kind of guys.

I just learnt the scale myself, and it seems like a cool scale.
Alittle tip from myself: use the blues scale, too. The b5 note is often called 'the evil note', and can be used for mysterious effects. Opeth-style :-).

Hope that helps.

Hardly any band knows what they're doing scale-wise, it's just logical that some of their junk will fit into a scale cause it will probably sound terrible and dissonant if it doesn't. There's no theory knowledge of theory involved, just knowing when things sound good or not.

Yeah, when I play guitar I never really use any scales or theory, I just play and if it sounds good, it sounds good. But since scales were made to create a guidance to make something that sounds good anyway, it kind of comes down to the same thing, just in a more trial and error way.
