Prog Recommendations

For Modern Prog: Arena, IQ, Pendragon, Glass Hammer, The Flower Kings, Kaipa, Spock's Beard, Solo Neal Morse, Solo Roine Stolt, The Tangent, Karmakanic, Transatlantic, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield
Heh, funny... most of these bands might be modern (Kaipa have been around in obscurity for eighty years or so it seems, though :D), but their music is about as retro as can be - except for Porcupine Tree.

to repeat a couple...

Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale (keep an open mind with this one)

that album was CRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZYYYYYYY HAH A HAHAAHHA HA HHAHAHAAHAHHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it was like some kind of freak show or somthing like that. i liked the insturmental, and that crazy voice guy. i think his names vortex.
buy sham mirrors first though.

My first POS album was Remedy Lane and then 12:5. I ended up not listening to them for about six months until I got more of an itch to keep trying, so I bought The Perfect Element and loved it and then ...Concrete Lake and loved it, too.

So I gave POS a chance and liked them.

Repeating previous recommendations-
Threshold is a band with VERY high quality
Evergrey- more power metal, but they keep the songs interesting and varied throughout. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
If you can handle a dark sound, then try Opeth. You may think they're death metal, at first.

Wow, lots of great recommendations. :)

Some specific albums to check out:

Andromeda's Extension of the Wish - one of my favorite progressive metal releases ever. Any fan of Dream Theater should own this. Lots of Petrucci-esque riffs coming from Johan and lots of cool instrumental passages. And they're from Sweden, so you can't go wrong. ;)

Power of Omens' Eyes of the Oracle - some great technical prog. Fans of Geoff Tate should take note. Highly recommend their 20-min epic Test of Wills.

Adagio's Underworld - also one of my favorite progressive metal releases ever. A must own for Symphony X fans. The whole band has got some good chops, and while the singer is no Russ Allen, he's certainly not bad. I highly recommend this over Sanctus Ignis because they seem to have developed a bit more of their own sound on this one.

Wastefall's Soulrain 21 - For Pain of Salvation fans, I need to recommend these guys. They're a relatively new progressive band from Greece, and I noticed on their website they played a few shows with PoS. The singer is the closest I've heard to someone sounding like Gildenlow, especially in the mid-ranged vocals (and the rapping). :p While it's obvious PoS is a huge influence for them, I wouldn't quite call them a clone. Pain of Salvation and Wastefall are as similar as Adagio and Symphony X. Similar styles, but they still have their own sound. You can listen to some clips here: www.wastefall.com

For Zero Hour fans, check out Jasun & Troy's progressive/industrial/death metal band Death Machine. Also, check out Jasun Tipton's new jazzy solo album Seduction.

I definitely concur with Prog Maiden with regard to her assessment of Adagio. They sorta had more of their own sound with Underworld. Don't get me wrong, I love "Second Sight" and "The Stringless Violin", but there's something to be said about the overall tightness of the second opus, particularly with songs like "Chosen".

As for PoS, my first album was "One Hour by the Concrete Lake". I absolutely love these guys, for the simple reason that they like to explore stuff that would lie beyond the boundaries that people normally set.

Evergrey, for the same reasons as PoS. ^_^

I believe the band 'Winds' is not mentioned yet. Altough it is not pure prog metal, there a are a couple of progressive elements in it.
Especially the album 'The Imaginary Direction of Time' I like. The viool is an important instrument on the cd. You may think after listening it once that it isn't good (I had that feeling) but after two/three times orso i did think it was really cool afterall.

hm, first post @ this forum :)

At War With Self has a new disc coming out that somehow was available at the local store and I highly recomend it especially if you like instrumental discs.

My tastes are way different from most of you, but the following bands deserve to be mentioned in a prog recommendations thread...

Frank Zappa
Porcupine Tree (only one recommendation before this one)
I Mother Earth, especially their newest album
Julian Cope, but only if you're a hippy (he's good, but very unconventional for prog)
Flatstick, if you can find their stuff.
and of course the amazing Peter Gabriel. Can't believe no one mentioned him yet.

The new At-War-With-Self is really good it has Glen Snelwar from Gordons Knot on Guitar and main writer,Michael Manring on Fretless bass and Mark Zonder of Fates Warning Fame on drums, even knowing there is no singing on it..Its really good Like Cynic (Focus Era) or Aghora ,Maybe a little
