Quick roundup of best albums of 2004 thus far

anyone who's heard "secrets of the moon - carved in stigmata wounds"?
I've had this since it came out. What do you think of it?

I really like it, but it's a bit too long. Anything over 70 mins is always hard to appreciate quickly, but I have a feeling I'll REALLY like it once I've listened to it enough.

I haven't even listened to the 2nd CD actually. I assumed it was just some crappy bonus CD...I will do soon though, how is it?

No it's worth listening ( well if you have the ltd edition you will ...) , contains a Dead Can Dance cover too . However don't expect this to be the album quality

Xasthur: Telepathic with the Deceased
Leviathan: Tentacles of Whorror
Deathspell Omega: Si Monumentum Requirec Circumspice

Stand-Up Guy - In Fixation, Conspire

Damn, this is brialliant. Brilliant, I say. A slow, almost doom-like post-hardcore band. Nate and BSW will like this a lot. The rest of you, ignore. Go listen to Dimmu or something. heh

Anata-Under a Stone With No Inscription
Vintersorg-The Focusing Blur
Vehemence-Helping the World to See
Winds-The Imaginary Direction of Time
Orphaned Land - Mabool :headbang:
Exodus- Tampo of the damned :worship:
Death Angel - The art of Dying (hated it at first, but it grows on you)
Scarve - Irradiant
Decapitated - The Negation

Oops, thankyou Justin for reminding me of:
ARSIS - A Celebration of Guilt

good album!

I threw caution to the wind and ordered the Arsis CD the other day. I know, I'm probably going to puke all over it - with it being described as melodic death in some reviews - but with all the hype in this forum, and other misc. reviews I've read, the hype gave me a buzz.

Hate Forest could make #1 spot now, that ending really fucking gets to me.

This album is complete awesomeness. I was listening to it in bed the other night, pitch black and as the album played I basically made up a story to go along with it. Images of black clad armies marching across barren fields to destroy all in their path came to me. Everything about it came together perfectly and it was brilliant. At the end of the last "metal" song, the King of the enemy army is slain, then it breaks into the crying part at the end, frickin perfect. Likely Top 5 material.

JayKeeley: If you don't like Arsis I shall kick you in the nuts. :tickled: I didn't expect it to be half as aggressive and ripping as it is, excellent album.

Let's see...

Callisto - True Nature Unfolds
Neurosis - The Eye of Every Storm
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Halo Manash - Par-Antra I - VIR
+ shitloads of others

Eagerly awaiting the new Mastodon album....

That's the great thing about Hate Forest, no lyrics are ever provided, so its all based on your own interpretation of the emotions evoked with the music and the songtitles.

I'm wondering if I should edit my review on my site and give Battlefields a 10/10 instead of the 9.25... it seems to get better and better every time I pull it out.

It's fun, I have a bit of a story for Battlefields as well. Swans, the Ukraine, and desert rock are consuming my being. I'm diverse this year. :loco:

Don't worry JK, labeling an act never truly gives you an accurate description. I think you're in for a treat.

What's funny is sometimes "anti-hype" can be just as effective as "hype". In other words you're so disenchanted with the melodic death genre that you already have an inclination towards disliking it. Now, because you're expecting so little, even if it's "pretty good" to you, it will seem that much better because you are expecting to be dissappointed.
