Albums of 2004

Hot:
Mastodon - Leviathan
A lot of people are raving about this album, and for good reason. Hopefully a sign of lots of good things in the future.
My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light
A return to excellence. Best production ever.

Not:
In Flames - Soundtrack to Your Escape
Dream Theater - Train of Thought

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum...
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
The Chasm - The Spell of Retribution
Countess - Heilig Vuur
Morgion - Cloaked by Ages, Crowned in Earth
Isis - Panopticon

Graveland and Neurosis will probably end up on here too. It's been a great year for metal, albeit in quality more than quantity (well, if you ignore all the trash that's been released too.)

Drudkh - Autumn Auroral; what is so good about this album/band? I havent heard it, so I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I have noticed that many have listed it.

Super-naturalist Burzum-tinged black metal, with very rich, sweet, colourful melodies, and long, epic tracks. "Forgotten Legends" is also recommended.

For me, it's really come down to 3, and almost 4.

Threshold's Subsurface. Easily #1
Ayreon's The Human Equation is a distant 2, and being an Ayreon fanboy, I'm kind of disappointed.
Third (puts on flame suit) for me has been Evergrey's The Inner Circle. Yeah, yeah. I know. Swedish non-death metal = teh g@yne555, but whatever.

4th is an album I just found out by a band called Dreamscape. The End of Silence.

HELLVETO(Pol) - In arms of kurpian phantom

Undoubtedly, the most unique material since Nokturnal Mortum's ground breaking effort "NeChrist" ...

It took me "many" spins to finally appreciate this album, and I was contemplating whether or not to trade it at one point, believe it or not. I recommend this to be played at loud volumes with a few glasses of brandy at hand. ;)

I haven't heard very many from this year, but the best I can think of right now are:

Decapitated- The Negation
Suffocation- Souls to Deny

Also, is the new Cannibal Corpse any good? I see it on a lot of lists.
