RC Top 10 of 2004 Question for the board

Drudkh better be fucking good after all of the hype that has been bestowed upon them on this board.

I was just thinking last night that Negura Bunget is one of the most overrated bands discussed on this board.
Negura Bunget overrated my ass!! Pfffft.

I don't think that you are going to appreciate Drudkh, to be honest.

Any and all praise I've seen heaped on Negura Bunget is well deserved. Same goes for Drudkh and Blut Aus Nord. Add Taake and Ulver to the picture, and you have all the black metal I'll ever need.

Well, Negura is quite good, no doubt. I just feel their masterpiece has not been written as of yet. That being said, I'm not taking anything away from the band, as each time I listen to their albums, I enjoy them more and more.

But give me Graveland, Enslaved, Nokturnal Mortum, and Aeternus over them any day.

And why wouldn't I appreciate Drudkh, because I think Negro Bunghole is overrated and overhyped?

No. I'm just basing this off of the music you usually seem to like in contrast with the stuff you don't. 'Tis all. But fuck, who knows. I think anyone who doesn't appreciate Drudkh's Autumn Aurora is out of their mind. :loco:

You could be right, but I'm not sure how that qualifies them as being currently "overrated"? Anyway, a band can have more than one masterpiece.

True. True. I should have said, I feel Negura Bunget has not written the album that will firmly secure their place in black metal history/legend/lore/pickyourword.

Kinda like how Peace Sells for Megadeth, or Puppets for Metallica, or A Blaze for Darkthrone. You know, that one album.

As far as them being overrated, it's just like PJ said. I recognize that the band is good, but they aren't the end all/be all of last year. It's not like I'm saying they're overrated in the Blut Ass Nord sense, because, well, NB actually writes good music.

The thing about NB is that they surfaced in 2003 for most people, although I recognize they'd been around for a while before that. I remember when Nate came on to the forum talking about some Transylvanian band and I actually laughed at him about Dracula or something.

Anyway, so 2003 was like the "year of Negura Bunget" because they released 'N Crugu Bradului, and simultaneously, people went out looking for their back catalogue. That's why it might have seemed like they were getting lots of hype because it was all concentrated around one timeframe.

If you think about it, comparitively speaking, we barely talked about NB in 2004.

I wonder how a masterpiece is discovered anyway? Is it something that becomes recognized immediately after its release, or does it take years for people to appreciate and recognize the genius? You never know, in a few years, everyone might rank "Sala Molksa" as their magnum opus....

I remember getting the promo and reading the datasheet, and was like, WTF is this? Transylvania?

Yes, good point.

Comparitively, yes, but they are still talked about (NM vs NB....NM is better :D ), which they should be. But we'll see how people react when their next one comes out, since they are fairly known now.

I think it takes years, but good question. Some of the current albums being hailed as certain bands' masterpieces puzzle me, though:

Amorphis - Karelian Isthmus
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum
The Chasm - Deathcult
Megadeth - RIP
Graveland - Thousand Swords
Emperor - Nightside

There are more, but you get it...

Years! Only maybe 2 albums have I hailed as masterpieces within a year of their release. Nearly all my other 10/10 scores took around 3 years to earn such classification.
