Observing my kids watching Studio Ghibli films is pretty interesting. Before kids, I thought the Studio Ghibli films were quite slow moving since I was so used to watching American 'toons, even including the likes of Tom & Jerry perhaps. But now, seeing a 4 and 2 year old watching "Totoro" or "Kiki's Delivery Service" makes me realize the pacing is perfectly normal, and not 'hyper'.
If I put on Toy Story or Cars, the kids can't sit still and they're easily distracted with all the mayhem....but put on a Studio Ghibli film and they are hooked. It grabs their full attention. And this happens each time, even if it's something they've already seen.
My Neighbor Totoro is just a remarkable example. Suppose I should try Princess Mononoke again, although parts of it are pretty graphic. Maybe I'll defer for a couple more years...
Anything by Studio Ghibli is worth a try if you ask me! Some of the most imaginative, beautiful, compelling films I've seen in my life, and more than a few of my all time favourites: Totoro, Mononoke, Spirited Away, Pom Poko, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.
Strangely, I've never seen a single non-Ghibli anime EVER.
I seriously cannot recommend this series enough. It's like an episodic series of fables about mystical semi-alive things called Mushi. No stupid usual anime trappings like gratuitous fanservice. Very unique, very entertaining, most of the endings are not necessarily happy.
p.s. in fact if you like spirited away this would be right up your alley
I sure as hell did! A lot. Then I lent it to a couple I've known for a while almost a year ago and they still haven't watched it or given it back! Time to take up arms and pillage something until my movie is back in my hands.
Holy shit I've watched countless hours of anime since starting this thread.
Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are my favourites. Lots more are tied for second place, but those two series are GAYMAZING. Hooray for new Evangelion in a few short months!
Grave of the Fireflies made me cry like a bitch more than several other woman-moments in cinema did combined. Fucking hell god damn christ was that depressing + awesome.
I remember watching Grave of the Fireflies. I totally ruined the mood. I was watching it with a group of people and after the boy's sister died, I said something along of the lines of "he should consume her flesh and gain her power."
That was the saddest part of the whole goddamn thing!
Jerry ,please tell me you've now watched this masterpiece!!?
Also, listen to the interview with director Isao Takahata. He is wise, old, and insightful. Also, he was around for the events upon which the movie is based.
You know which other Ghibli film is especially awesome? Princess Mononoke. Goddamn, so epic and unique!
I'd watch it tonight if it wasn't currently in the possession of some bint who is in London studying Shakespeare at Cambridge before she comes back for a week, then moves out east to do a masters degree in English at Dalhousie in Halifax.
