Ok, dont get me wrong, I think Dream Theater is a very talented band... But if i were to go on Kazaa and download some dt, 9/10 songs i think are crap *avoids the stones being thrown*

Someone recomend me some songs to get or cd's to buy, for the n00b dream theater fan thx, \m/

Woah, you're just like me, a Dream Theater fan from Southern California. Rock on, man! If you want some more stuff like Dream Theater, download Rebirth by Angra. Its Dream Theater, but faster. If you want something better than Dream Theater, download Epica by Kamelot or Recreation Day by Evergrey. For a real break-through disc, download Towers of Avarice. Hope I can be of some help, all of the CDs I've mentioned are tremendous. If you want more, just repost here, and I'll be glad to give you a list of some excellent bands. Cheers! (no, I'm not British)

Karma by Kamelot is their best, first of all, second of all try some Conception, Nevermore, Freak Kitchen, ARK, (ray alder era) Fates Warning, Spiral Architect, Nightingale, Zero Hour...

the list goes on and on.

Go for older dream theater, Images and Words and Awake...for the newer stuff, I like Metropolis pt. II the best.

Songs?
Pull me Under
Under a Glass Moon
Metropolis pt. 1 (The Miracle and the Sleeper)
Take the Time
Ytse Jam
Fortune in Lies
Caught in a Web
Erotomania*
The Mirror
Lie
Scarred
Burning my Soul
Hell's Kitchen*
Just let me Breathe
Fatal Tragedy
Beyond this Life
Home
The Dance of Eternity*
The Glass Prison

*Instrumental

Are you nuts? Angra?

Are you serious? NOTHING? like Dream Theater? When I first played some of those songs I thought James LaBrie himself was the lead singer of Angra. But then again, I am an "untrained ear," I know little, if anything about guitar work, tempo, and other technical aspects of music. Just on the surface, I think Angra is Dream Theater with different subject matter and sped up, but hell, I still love both bands.

I'll say it again, but Edu sounds nothing like LaBrie :)

Cool that you like Angra tho :D

Dream Theater, huh?

Anything from Images and Words, but step warrily after it. People can get pretty opinionated about DT's other material. Me personally, I love all they've done including their newest Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, but I view music a little differently than most I've seen. For instance, the content and the reasons behind the rhyming.

I too love everything that they've done. :) The satanic rabbit's list of DT songs is pretty good, but I'd have to add Learning to Live (one of my favorite songs ever) and Blind Faith to it.

As for other bands people have mentioned...some of them sound like they've been influenced by Dream Theater, but most don't sound much like Dream Theater at all to my ears. I guess my suggestion is if you want something that sounds like Dream Theater, then listen to Dream Theater. If you want to discover some other great music that's in the same genre (for the most part) while you're at it, check out those other bands too! :)

I can understand how people can think that angra sounds like dt. But they don't.

Yes, Edu's voice can kinda sometimes snarle like James Labrie sometimes did before he lost his voice.

The only Angra song (On rebirth) that sounds like dt is Midnight sun and mabey some aspects of Judgment Day.

Angra and Dt's style is very different. Angra is (good, not shitty) Euro power metal with alot of prog elements.

DT is just US Prog rock/metal.

Mabey that clears it up,
