Here in a couple of weeks I'm going to do an operating system reinstall on my computer. I'm going to get some extra gig sticks of ram & get an audio interface so I can record.

My computer runs like shit a lot of the time. I think I have some kind of virus or something bogging my computer down. I'm thinking the reinstall will be just what I need to get my computer back in shape.

I use AVG for my anti-virus program. I have a few registry cleaners on my computer now. I heard that registry cleaners can fuck your shit up. Is that true??

Sorry if this isn't very coherent, I'm freaking tired. I need some tips on what to do to get my shit running back good & I don't want to have any problems with the audio recording.

I download a lot of shit from torrent sites. I don't think my anti-virus is detecting the virus that is probably on my shit. I pirated quite a few programs & they're what holds the viruses, but the movies/music.

well, I will be doing the reformat, but what I'm asking is should I get a good registry cleaner to keep things clean after the reformat??

I got a new computer a couple months ago. My old computer was starting to get super slow, and it would freeze all the time. It got to the point where over half the time I tried to boot it would freeze in the booting process. So I got the registry cleaner Cyberdefender. The first scan I ran with it found a fuckload of malicous files, and when I tried to delete them my computer shit the bed and my main hard drive ceased to function. So I had to get a new computer. My point with all of this is that if your registry is filled with corrupted files, it's possible that your computer may cease to function alltogether once the registry is cleaned. I don't think Cyberdefender is a bad program, but rather that cleaning an overfilled registry can kill your computer entirely.

Life Sucks, I've heard horror stories like that about registry cleaners, but only from like <1% of people probably.

I have two of them that I use (besides Spybot & Adaware, if those count) called RegCure & Cleanup Utilities 2007. CU2007 seems like a pretty damn cool program. Any comments on those?

Also, when I do the reinstall I will be using my friend's harddrive to backup all my files to. Can I drag my programs that I would like to keep from my computer to his harddrive & back to my computer?? In order to do that could I just drag the program from the 'Program Files' folder into the 'Program Files' folder on my reformatted machine & the programs will work?? Would I be better off doing that or trying to re-dl what programs I can??

The key to succesful use of a registry cleaner is to not allow your registry to become "overfilled" If you run it on a regular basis you will not have any problems. If you try to use it after downloading files for 3 years that is where the problems occur.
