Registry Cleaners... Should I use them??

Just stop using torrent sites and run some of this cleaning stuff and you should be fine.

Naw, I haven't been doing much torrent stuff at all. I've tried a handfull of programs to clean my shit up & it won't do it.

I have a Dell... Maybe if I tried to run AVG in safe mode I could locate this bug. How do I get my shit in safe mode again??

No, it can detect stuff like Trojans as well. It has become extremely better over the years.
Indeed. Spybot is pretty sweet.

Not even. Just be more careful. Don't download pr0n torrents, and always look at the reviews/comments (often people will say when it contains viruses/spyware), the contents of the torrent (duh), and make sure it's from a legit site, then when you've downloaded it run spyware shit a lot.

I don't understand why people have so much trouble with computers.

AVG
CCleaner
Ad-Aware

I get a "virus" maybe once a year max. And I say "virus" because it's fixed within seconds by AVG. I never feel the need to run Ad-Aware or CCleaner--I only run them if I get bored.

Honestly, wtf are people doing that gets their shit fucked up?

Ad aware contains spyware. Do not use it.

I dunno where you got your version, but when it comes to mine, no it does not.

Indeed. I run all those + Spybot, and I don't think I've ever gotten a virus problem since having them.

My Windows Media Player is always slowing down or locking up & closing. I have about 90 gigs of music & 50 gigs of video on my computer & only one gig of ram. Is that why it acts up like that???

I will be getting 2 more gigs of ram very soon, but I also need to get a new fucking dvd burner... :Smug: It's the 2nd time it's broken, but the first time my machine was under warranty, so this time I'll be paying out of pocket. I have a Dell XPS 410; any recommendations for a DVD burner that's not going to fucking break every 8 months!!!??? :erk:

fuckery

If you're willing to shell out some money, get Spy Sweeper.

I'm pretty damn sure a lot of programs contain harmless spyware....

I was actually looking at SpySweeper on the Dell site this morning... Any other comments on that? Does it work as a registry cleaner as well as a spyware remover? Does Ad-Aware or SpyBot work as a registry cleaner?

Work with me here, I'm not the most enlightened when it comes to computers, but I try.

When I do the reinstall I only want to get the stuff on my computer that I need & that will help it run great. No more torrenting programs & porn sites for me. I need to have a clean running maching & a ram upgrade because I'm going to be doing a ton of recording.

Life Sucks, I've heard horror stories like that about registry cleaners, but only from like <1% of people probably.

I have two of them that I use (besides Spybot & Adaware, if those count) called RegCure & Cleanup Utilities 2007. CU2007 seems like a pretty damn cool program. Any comments on those?

Also, when I do the reinstall I will be using my friend's harddrive to backup all my files to. Can I drag my programs that I would like to keep from my computer to his harddrive & back to my computer?? In order to do that could I just drag the program from the 'Program Files' folder into the 'Program Files' folder on my reformatted machine & the programs will work?? Would I be better off doing that or trying to re-dl what programs I can??
I don't think backing up program files would be a problem, but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't even remember the last time I got a virus. Since I switched to Firefox, cookies, pop ups and viruses have been minimal

EDIT: If you have Firefox, use these: NoScript, Flashblock, AdBlock Plus. They are add-ons for Firefox that are excellent. If you don't have Firefox, you're gay and should get it.

You may need a better video card if you're computer is freezing during videos. Another gig of ram will improve performance when multitasking.

Naw, it doesn't freeze during videos... Sometimes it freezes while I'm scrolling down the page... But other programs close like that too. Hell, even Firefox closes sometimes for no reason.

I been done had FireFox, but I never put any add ons on it, even though you told me to awhile back. I put VideoDownloadHelper, AdBlockPlus, & NoScript... Fuck, I had to turn NoScript off. It fucks everything up. I will have to do a bit of reading to learn how to set it up to trust sites. What's so great about that one?

I'm still hunting for FlashBlock...

I did a virus scan, registry cleaning, & SpyBot scan in safe mode & so far my computer seems very fast, but I haven't tried to use any real program yet. It's faster on the internet though, that's for sure.

I'm going to submit a HiJackThis log file on one of their forums to see if anyone sees anything on there I need to get rid of.

NoScript is good because it won't allow scripts that could harm your computer. It's not that fucking hard to use. You just allow the ones you need and that's it. I didn't even read the fucking instructions on how to use it. It doesn't fuck anything up at all. If there's a script that runs on the web page that you need to enable to see stuff, just enable it.

I've been using NoScript. What I hate about it is that it will sometimes block like 3-4 sites on one page & you have to accept them all. I kinda get annoyed with the pop up at the bottom. I will get used to it though. I also found that FlashBlock add-on.

What's good is VideoDownloadHelper. It plays those fucking videos from sites like Break.com, where I used to have to use Internet Exploere to play their videos. I got a couple of other add ons too, some of which aren't that useful, but cool.

CCleaner... Jesus. I'm at a loss for words with this program. Within 30 seconds it removed about 350mb of bullshit files from my computer.

It removed TON OF STUFF THAT RegCure & TuneUpUtilities2007 was missing.
