Hey everyone. Looking to get some advice. I'm VERY new to anything that has the tag of "doom". So new that I have Swallow the Sun listed under the "doom metal" genre. I've really enjoyed listening to Swallow the Sun, Daylight Dies, November's Doom, Estatic Fear, Paradise Lost, and Rapture lately. I know the first three aren't really doom by any means, and I understand that, but I was hoping for some suggestions.
My curiosity was aroused tonight when I finally got around to listening to Candlemass - Death Magic Doom. Holy shit yeah. Awesome.
So, can anyone give me some suggestions on two different categories?
1) Bands similar in quality and style to Swallow the Sun, Daylight Dies, Nov's Doom, etc
2) The milestones/epics of doom metal
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I would check out October Tide, I have always thought Daylight Dies drew a lot of inspiration from them. There was only 2 albums however. There may be another some day 
Also Saturnus is glorious, but not all that similar to those others you like.
And of course there is the first 2 Katatonia albums
But I know you aren't really into that so...

I hope that Saturnus will finally put something out this year as well. I think there is a youtube video of them performing a new track with Thomas' freshly buzzed head.

Ahhh, that is sad. As gay as it sounds that dude had some very nice hair.
I would kill for a new Saturnus album.

The new Les Discrets is coming out at the end of March. If it is anything like the first track on the Alcest split, it could be a quality album.

The tracks on the Alcest split were cool, but kinda boring. The new Alcest will probs be way better.

I thought all 3 Les Discrets tracks were gold, the second one was my favorite. If the album is anything like that it should be fantastic.
And I'm sure the Alcest album will be amazing.

LOL the new Dream Evil is hilarious. The song "The Ballad" had me laughing out loud for the entire 4 minutes. Randomly singing "When the children cry!" at the end had me in tears. The new Gamma Ray also leaqq'd but I couldn't care less.

I can't help you with 1.
But as far as 2 goes, pretty much anything by Cathedral rules and is very accessible even for non-doom/stoner fans (they pretty much single-handedly got me into the genre). Two of the best are "Come My Fanatics" and "Dopethrone" by Electric Wizard, who is probably my overall favorite stoner/doom band. Sleep's Holy Mountain and Jerusalem are awesome and important, but are probably acquired tastes (Dopesmoker, also cool, is like the extended version of Jerusalem). One of my recent favorites that I've been playing on repeat is "Busse Woods" by Acid King. Neal can probably help you out more than I can but I think that's a pretty decent start.

^ Thanks man. Appreciate the help. New Dark Tranquillity has some killers, and some fillers. Overall good vibes from the first listen though.
