Sometimes I like to chill out and listen to kind of "sad" stuff. Calms me down.. helps me crash out, lol.

Recommend me some bands BESIDES:

Anathema
Antimatter
Katatonia
Blackfield
Porcupine Tree

Just some pretty chill vibey shit like that.

Same here, I definitely have to have the "chillout" music, very much a part of the musical diet for me, and I dig all the bands you've listed. Check out Riverside. They're like the Polish Porcupine Tree.

I've also been getting into a band called Goblin from the 70s. Italian instrumental prog rock, kind of like Pink Floyd without the vocals. They did a bunch of horror movie scores for a director they were friends with, in fact most of their discography is scores. Opeth has totally ripped them off, you'll definitely hear the influence - which is great in my book, since Opeth is one of my favorite bands.

I am gradually tracking down more and more of Opeth's vintage vinyl influences. If anyone can recommend some more ambient/psychedelic 70s prog rock, I love the stuff and it would be appreciated. :)

Good shit Shane... that's a quick response, too, lol.

Yeah, just like that... this is badass

You might wanna dig into some post-rock/hardcore/whatever stuff like Pelican (instrumental) or Isis (with vocals). Laid back, yet deep and somewhat driving. And if you got a very lenghty attention-span maybe some shoegazing stuff like Godspeed You! Black Emperor... Or maybe some stuff like Alcest? http://www.myspace.com/alcestmusic

There are some albums that drag me down in a good way:
- OSI - Free (Kevin Moore's singing works perfect for this)
- Social Distortion - White Light, White Heat, White Trash
- Everything from Alice In Chains (Temple Of The Dog and Mad Season are pretty laid back too)
- Dream Theater - Images And Words
- Devin Townsend's solo stuff (pre-Ziltoid)
- Everything from Down, especially Nola

I appreciate the recommendations Slash, but Shane's point on with his. More along the way of Antimatter and Anathema is what Im trying to find.

Thx though, man!

Dream Theater - Images And Words

Really? I always felt I&W was quite a happy album, considering it uses so many major key sigs (not a bad thing).

I find film music the most emotional, but thats just me. Check out "Gollum's Song" from the LOTR: Two Towers soundtrack. That is depressing, really. Amazing vocals. YouTube ain't great but it gives you an idea..

You're probably already in love with King Crimson? ;)

It's mainly the contrast to Kevin Moore's lyrical style that makes it I guess. It's cheesy here and there yeah... but I really dig the atmosphere... and I severely miss it on their latter records. :(

when i want to chill out, i listen to:

Isis, Tool, Pelica, Jesu, Cavite, March Hare(seriously), bossk, and Russian Circles

check afew of them out if you haven't already :D

I like this type of music a lot, but all the good bands that I know of in this genre have already been mentioned. Keep them coming however :)

I can stongly recommend the following:

Alquin - The Mountain Queen
Bo Hansson - Lord of the Rings
Focus - Moving Waves
Mithrandir - For You the Old Women
Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra
Pentacle - La Clef des Songes
The early Antonius Rex and Jacula stuff for some necessary evil :Smokedev:

and of course the obvious stuff like:
Early Camel
Early King Crimson
Early Genesis

I also really like some of the more contemporary scandinavian bands with that 70's sound like Anekdoten, Anglagard, Landberk, Paatos, Morte Macabre, Dungen (actually anything with Reine Fiske in it :worship:).

Listen to this guy ;) Goblin was a great band. Too bad they were italians so english people didn't give a fuck about them.
They scored some movies of the one and only Dario Argento (horror thriller movies, a master if you're into old school thrillers).
