so what the hell is up with this shit bros

by random chance i happened upon a song by THE EVPATORIA REPORT on the youtubes today while working, and it was pretty ace frankly. also something by RED SPAROWES which was not as cool.

i always kind of avoided this genre because it always seemed TOO PRETENTIOUS to me, but maybe not? i don't know. i'd rather have pretension than complete lack of originality or purpose which is what most new metal feels like to me these days. i need some new experiences before i lose my faith in music at large.

so bros. tell me a number of songs or albums to download by some artists befitting of this particular silly genre label. thanx in advance.

im not familiar with post rock as much as i am with post metal. i think the ones that people generally point to are Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Ros. id be interested in some recs here too.

yeah, i couldnt stand Red Sparowes.

i guess Pelican can be included here. Australasia is a bonafide classic. this one is more doomy post rock/metal, while their later stuff is pretty much post hard rock. go for the songs Australasia and Drought and Nightendday. also check out Justin Broadricks remix of Angel Tears, it rules your face

The best examples of "post rock" that I have heard are:

Evpatoria Report - Golevka
GY!BE - (1) Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2) F#A#infinity
Mono - Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined
Sigue Ros - Ágætis byrjun .. ( ) is pretty decent too

Some folks on RC, particularly NAD, creamed their shorts for A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corner of Our Rooms... but I have long since sold it. I couldn't deal with the vocals at the time.

Everything else that I have heard all sounds the same. The few early releases are all you need, imo. After them, it's all redundant...I guess for the exception of bands who incorporated the style into their own music like a few bands that you currently enjoy already.

Your #1 priority should be:

Doomcifer's list is good, except I'd also include EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY - Those Who Tell The Truth....

supposedly, Slint's Spiderland just about jumpstarted the whole thing. never heard it myself, though ive heard good things

I can see that. Other albums that supposedly had a big impact: TALK TALK - Laughing Stock, TORTOISE - Millions Now Living Will Never Die

Seconded.

I've always been a fan of God is an Astronaut, as well.

All Is Violent, All Is Bright (2005)
Far from Refuge (2007)

Talk Talk - Laughing Stock & Spirit Of Eden are fucking AWESOME.

Slint - Spiderland is a great album and completely ahead of it's time as well. Although the album predates it, it sounds like some college indie kids went into the studio and recorded a Neurosis album with off-kilter rhythms.

I just wish it was mixed louder, so I could blare it properly on headphones. I'm not even joking.

Generally, I pretty much agree with this statement.

you know, it's hard because i feel like i'm one of the few that still TRULY and SINCERELY believes in metal to almost manowarish proportions, that metal is worthwhile as one of the most emotionally potent and diverse musical styles, even that the "ideologies" behind some of the more serious bands are sound, but this garbage heap of a "scene" keeps disappointing and laughing at me with all the dreadful crap it insists on incessantly spewing and it's hard to hold back the hate (and it's hard to learn from the past when the past is a whore to the last)

thanks for the suggestions bros

this shit is BLOWING ME THE FUCK AWAY

also, where is a good place to order things like these on the internet?

I've never seemed to get my hands on a real copy of Golevka, and I remember it being pretty hard to find back when it came out. I'd assumed that they were still pretty obscure.

Yeah, I still haven't bought the proper release of that album. Back when Ellestin introduced us all to it, it could only be ordered from some Scandinavian country which charged $17 US plus some crazy shipping. I think Lizard splurged on it though. It's a shame because it is up there as one of my favorites of the decade.

On that note, has anyone heard their album after that entitled Maar?

What? Just turn it the fuck up. It will have more impact and not give you a headache as it would if it was "mixed louder." And if it goes awry, well that your headphones fault. :loco:

this is a real problem actually for me as well

it all comes down to the ipod and similar devices having a fucking wimpy headphone amplification stage, so even maximum volume just ain't loud enough on some conservatively mastered albums

EDIT: i'm talking about albums which don't even peak at 0 dBFS

I'm talking portable here: iPud, Discman, etc., all of which only go up to a certain volume. I hate this Loudness/compression thing as much as anybody, but at the same time I don't want my music interrupted by every raving transient crackhead that I happen to tread upon in the city in a given day. :)
