Call of Ktulu may well be my #1 overall Metallica track

For a long time it was my #1 overall song period. I think Fates Warning's Epitaph and maybe Black Stone Wielder have beaten it, but it's still just about the height of metal as art.

Or instrumentals in general are kind of a love them vs just think they're good thing.

I think the most beautiful songs in the world are instrumental. Human vocals are just an interference.

Metal singing was the main reason I couldn't get into metal as a young kid. It was Metallica's instrumentals and instrumental sections that really piqued my interest, and the fact that Hetfield had a manly voice helped a lot as well. I used to shittalk Van Halen all the time whenever I'd hear DLR's fucking voice on my dads speakers.

Seems like Call of Ktulu is a bit of a love it or hate it kind of track.

I don't hate any song on this album and might even rate my least favourite one ("Escape") 8,5/10. The two I voted out this round, thus also "The Call of Ktulu", would still get a 9,5/10 from me. Considering myself someone who generally prefers songs with vocals to instrumental pieces, this isn't a bad rating. Thinking about it, I would also say that "The Call of Ktulu" is not only my favourite instrumental by Metallica, but my favourite instrumental by any metal band.
