Thread over...

Hasn't the term "speed metal" sort of fallen out of usage? I remember calling a band speed metal back in the day, but I think I did so more out of ignorance than it being an actual genre. I really disagree with the whole wikipedia article. I think it's a generic, meaningless term. A precusor to thrash, perhaps. But Highway Star as the start of Speed Metal? That seems wrong to me.

my thoughts exactly

Geez, nice rec's guys :Smug:

Besides me being cynical (bad day), here are two:
Exciter (Canada)
&
Cacophony

Speed metal really is very similar to thrash, so honestly any faster paced thrash would do; frankly, I prefer Black/Thrash myself.

Edit:

Wish I saw this, because I agree. The only important distinction today between Thrash and Speed Metal is that Speed is supposed to be faster...that's about it . Of course, as with any other brand of music, you can incorporate any other type of style or technique and still be considered "enter genre here" if you are withing someone's conception of the pre-defined limits of classification.

Frankly, the sub-sub-sub genre shit that people start labeling things as pisses me off. Granted Speed metal was not originally a sub-genre, but....ah fuck it. No point in talking aboot this anymore.

What kind of slow music? Isis and Swallow the Sun come to mind first.

i was poking fun at how vague 'speed metal' is
lol
both good bands tho ( much more isis than swallow the sun tho, due to swallow only having a few good songs on each album except the first)
