This isn't really about the new album - more a suggestion about the site. I was looking on discography page today and noticed it was lacking Enter By The Twelfth Gate in the solo projects section. What would also be cool is a listing on the site of guest appearances or other projects that band members are involved in (and maybe move Prelude to the Millennium to a compilations subsection?)

Just spoke to MJR, & here's the latest:

They're working at a good pace on writing the new cd, they have parts of songs put together at this point that are equal to about half of the new cd, & have lots of ideas that they're working with. They're being very critical with this cd, wanting to kick it up a notch from The Odyssey & make it the best stuff yet; thus far they're working with material from MJR, Pinnella & LePond. Mike sounded really intent on cranking out some excellent music; he's in 'the writing zone', & only good things come of it when he's in that mindset.

When informed that some fans feared that Mike's comment in an earlier studio report about the new cd being 'darker' than The Odyssey would result in Russ doing death metal growls or the like, Mike said that wasn't going to happen.

Also, 'the dungeon' (the band's studio) has recently been gutted and totally revamped & is at its best ever acoustically, which should help contribute to some excellent sound on the new cd.

More news as it becomes available..

I just peed myself with excitement! Damned incontinence! :D

Very cool to hear about all of this. I do hope that "darker" sound will still retain the symphonic aspect to it...I did miss that a little in The Odyssey, and I'd hate to see their trademark sound disappear!

I do hope the sound has a more dark theme to it because that's what I think S-X has been known for.

I really hope for long songs too, even though I heard there's no epic, but still 10 min songs would do! Also have some beautiful instrumentals like Trascendence or On The Breath Of Poseidon.

Do you think we'll hear some samples anytime soon?

Err... which Mike? I'm guessing MJR, but it could be Pinnella or LePond. And speaking of which, how do they address each other will all the "Michael's" in the band? I've seen sitcom episodes based on that conceit.

Thanks for updating. Good luck to Symphony X.

I hope this album will be great like The Divine Wings of Tragedy ^_^

I love it, most of all Sea of Lies, one of my favourite song

'Mike' would be MJR, he's the one I'm in the most frequent contact with.

They call MJR Mike, Pinnella is P, & LePond is LePond.

Makes sense.

The following occurred to me right after I typed out MY speculations:

"Mikey" is not metal.

Spoke to MJR for about an hour and a half today, so here's the latest:

~Tour dates~

Symphony X will NOT be part of the Gigantour; finishing the new cd takes precedence over going out on tour.

Any South American festival dates are NOT confirmed as of today; when/if that changes, it will be announced here (and on the websites & mailing lists).

~Studio Report~

MJR has written almost 2 hours worth of music, & is now taking the time to find the right song title and lyrical content for each song. Each song has a certain feel to it, so it's important to make sure the lyrics reflect that feel. The 'darker' tone that they're aiming for which has been mentioned in previous studio reports will apply more to the orchestration and the lyrical content than the vocals, for those who continue to muse over the likelihood of Russell doing death metal growls. Much of that dark tone would lend itself to ghostly or horror themes (they're tossing around such ideas as Paradise Lost, and the works of Edgar Allan Poe, for example), but MJR says nothing is definite as far as lyrics go. He's also working on fine tuning the orchestration for the 'longer song', which also has a darker feel to it; that said, he wants it to be clear that it will not be 'an epic' like The Odyssey. One major aim throughout the writing process is making sure that the cd remains true to the Symphony X style, and kick things up a notch as well, without it sounding just like music they've done before; "I want to be excited about the music, so I know the fans will be excited about it" he said.

More info as it becomes available.
