Anybody remember that Metalica CD with the ?San Fran Orchestra? Well it was OK at best. The "orchestra" arrangements were done by a reputable conductor whos name excapes me at this time and Im lazy. Hes no longer with us as of a few years ago. Well the arrangments sucked and while it was an awsome undertaking, to me it was pointless. As per my recently retired signature, Progressive Metal smokes Mozart so dont try to put that mass hysteria behind a band of excellent musicians that can get the job done with 4 instruments. While progressive metal resembles "classical" it is centurys beyond and of a different sound and actually has a groove. To me nothing sounds more ridiculous than an orchestra trying to rock out. Its as bad as Sinatra trying to be "groovy baby" or Elvis sings "Number of the Beast"
NOTE: is in reference to everything you said EXCEPT the comments about the metallica/SF symphony arrangements. They were definitely pretty lacking. The guy's name is Michael Kamen BTW
I think they need to release a book of sheet music that focuses on Symphony X's orchestral pieces - lots of stuff from V, Divine Wings (song), Odyssey (song), Awakenings, Babylon, Revelation, Church of the Machine, etc.
Guitar music is the ONLY facet. Unless your talking Glenn Miller. Seriously, I do think the "we need to orchestrate this and multi harmonize that" mentality doesnt do rock or metal any justice. Sure there are pieces over the years that are written for that purpose that I like, but do we need entire albums? The bands that do symphonic "metal" like Nightwish, Epica and the opera singer metal bands just sound silly to me. It seems pointless to jumble something all up that our present day guitarists, keyboardists, bassists and DRUMMERs! can get done all by themselves. Music has evolved.
"And now we bring you the Boston Pops playing a rock and roll medly"... give me a break!
Yup. God probably hated S&M so much he just fried him.
I have to agree with razoredge, you couldn't be as fucking heavy as metal bands through an orchestra. You can have loud Wagner stuff, but it won't be as heavy, it would just be pretty damn loud and perhaps cool.
But that's okay because Mozart wasn't trying to be heavy or kick-ass, although his music may achieve this at times.
In the same way, Symphony X could not hope to be as deep or lofty or sublime as, say, the second movement of Mozart's 38th Symphony (Prague).
