Yeah he probably has gotten a lot of shit for taking over Martin's spot/ scrutiny for not being up to par. He has definitely proven his worth however and I hope,(if martin doesn't return) he takes Opeth to a new level which I know he can.

Let's not get carried away here. One of the best, definitely, but one of the most popular?
last time i checked, most metal fans have heard of, and probably like, opeth

he is very, very good... i felt like in the 2 shows i saw last week that he was really sounding great--that he'd made the songs "his own"... he's not lopez, nor should he be. he should bring his "axe-ness" to Opeth, just as Per bring his, uh, Pear-itude...
he ROCKS!
(and is cuter than friggin anything, esp. with no shirt on!!! yum!!!)

as far as Opeth's style of music goes...they are mainstream in comparison...but are nowhere near being mainstream in the 'green day' or 'britney spears' sense of the term.

And yes, Axe does deserve some thanks. Not only has he made it more possible for Opeth to tour (i'm sure they would've found another drummer eventually), but he has been playing songs that aren't exactly 'natural' to him....and doing a very good job of it, despite poeples complaints. They aren't songs he was involved in making...you cant expect him to do everything perfectly.

I still want to see or hear the solo he did.

Yeah, but to say they're one of the most popular metal bands in the world is getting a bit carried away. Say "popular metal bands" and most people will think Metallica, Black Sabbath, Slipknot *shudders* and Iron Maiden, etc. When Opeth are playing large stadiums at every stop on a tour, playing in front of 200 000 people at Rock In Rio and become a household name they will indeed be one of the most popular.

i didn't say "one of the 5 most popular," i just said one of the most popular. they are probably top 50, and if not that, then definitely top 100

We caught Opeth in Grand Rapids, and everything about the show was spectacular. I want to thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us, and for making it possible for Opeth to tour. I have seen Opeth four times with you behind the reigns of the rhythm in Lopez absence, and each time has been masterful.

Being a percussionist myself, I publicly apologize for all the "axe" haters out there... they are dumb ass fanboys that have no concept for all the talent you have, and what it takes to play at the level you do.

See you in New Orleans.

Leon

I'm waiting to see Opeth live a 2nd time with Axe before making a harsh judgement towards him. Change is never an easy process & if Axe performs well in Orlando than he'll have my full support. He was a little off the 1st time I saw him, but then again Opeth's material can't be easy to learn overnight.

I'll try to meet him after the show to see what all the buzz is about. I hope I can recognize him

I was a bit dissapointed that I could not see one the coolest metal drummers (Martin Lopez) the other night, but I was amazed when I saw Axenrots drum skills he nailed each song, even the end of Deliverance. Hats off to Martin because those are some tough shoes to fill.
