Behemoth owe a lot of popularity to their heavy touring schedule. They work hard and it's paid off for them. Their touring goes a long way in explaining their popularity versus similar/better DM bands.

Morbid Angel is classic death metal, and not really similar enough to compareMy Man Mahmoud said:
Deicide is pretty solid traditional death metal, while Behemoth is more experimental or otherwise not traditional at all. There music serves different purposes.
Vader is not as good, and somewhat lower quality.
also Nile is good and probably the most similar, but they are probably on the same level as far as quality and brutalness. Also they share a ancients/mythical theme.

Behemoth are alright, but as for similar sounding bands, Belphegor are much better in my opinion.
"demigod" is a DM masterpiece IMO

I really, really like Behemoth, in their modern DM guise. I find them to be a more accessible version of Nile, in some senses (though that isn't really fair to them). Behemoth have managed to fuse eastern tinges with DM and healthy dollops of good old fashioned HM.
I think that some folks around here approve of brutality over memorable song writing, which is a shame...
