The -Core Thread

The Hatebreed type lyrics, though, those are dead serious. People actually mean that.

And that's what's wrong with it. They don't don't do it in an artistic manner; the lyrics are completely devoid of metaphors, prose, or poetry. Music (yes, even hardcore) is art, and thus lyrics should, I think, be written in a creative style. Inspirational hardcore lyrics are just commands and axioms. Tell me how to do positive things with my life in an interesting way. Some gore lyrics are also guilty of this, being nothing but laundry lists of how to murder and dismember prostitutes, but the best gore lyrics are comedic and full of hyperbole.

edit: That's what I also hate about political lyrics.

people seem to hate on Chelsea Grin alot but i love their stuff.

CG is monstrous live. Far better than on their albums.

That's a big thing with deathcore. The live experience is integral to the music. A band like Suffokate or Whitechapel can release a decent album, but it's not until you get in the pit and start crushing it that you understand what all the fuss is about.

Some metal is meant for sitting and sinking into, that's where you get a Shining or a Blut Aus Nord or Esoteric, but these guys don't work if you're sitting and analyzing the nuances any more than you should gently nibble into a big-ass bucket of hot wings.

Just going by the numbers, there have to be a fair amount of people on UM that have death/metalcore in their playlists, from the "acceptable" ones like JfaC's later albums to the ones no one will really admit to, so let's show some love to the oft-hated metal.

I'll start off with one that I will always have a soft spot for:

Just look at that fucking guy. I can't believe this kind of shit still exists.

I know. It'd be so much better if he made sure to look and act exactly like everyone else in every other band. Stupid guys and their individuality.

I'm not sure where to start with this, but first of all, if you're going to sound pretentious and cultured, it helps to at least know the literary devices you're using instead of just jumbling them all together. Prose, poetry, and lyric are not all the same thing and one doesn't require the other. I'm not even sure how you came to that conclusion, but there exists tons of poetry that doesn't utilize "prose" and there's tons of "prose" that doesn't utilize poetic techniques. I also didn't know that any kind of literature be it lyrics, poetry, fiction, etc had to have metaphors to be art. This isn't a thread on literary techniques, but I just want to point out that you pretty much sound like you have no idea what you're talking about. There is no "criteria" for literature. Just because you're not into it doesn't devalue its artistic merit.

I get that you find ignorant mosh lyrics cheesy, brah. Truth be told, I feel that way too, but that's the point. They're cheesy, affirmative, etc. You say "some gore lyrics are guilty of this" but let's be real. There are no "intellectual" metal bands. Metal is just as cheesy if not cheesier. If you're going to listen to hardcore, you can't belong to the no fun club.

That was a very intelligent and articulate way to say that you're butthurt. I admit that I do not have a BA in English, so yeah, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about if you're going to be an uppity cunt about what I said. I like how you flamed me for my opinion and then agreed with me simultaneously. Do you have a point or you just being a fucking cock?

I have a BA in English. The fact that he said there are no intellectual metal bands made me ignore everything else.

I thought they were considered melodeath?

I thought they were considered tech death.

Great musicians, but I still have a hard time accepting Christian metal. Screaming for Jesus baffles me.

I don't care when they're not screaming blatantly obvious God loving lyrics, which they aren't (at least not on the first couple of albums). If I didn't know they were a christian band, I wouldn't have picked it.

Norma Jean and As I Lay Dying are probably my favorite Xtian -core bands, because neither one is "preachy". I would characterize both band's lyrics as more societal commentary than religious. AILD's lyrics are straight up Dakryn style NWO/conspiracy theories these days, IMO.

I dunno if they're considered "core" or what, but The Chariot is definitely my favorite Xtian band. And one FUCK of a live show.

AILD's lyrics are probably one of their strong points IMO. The band has said in interviews that their lyrics are just about life told through the eyes of christians which is interesting because some of them actually flirt with the notion of an internal struggle with faith and making sense of the modern world with "God" being factored into the equation. TBH though I would never have guessed that they were christian just by reading the lyrics, unless someone would have told me.
