Seriously, Deathspell Omega couldn't suck more. The only way you could honestly be a fan of their music, is if you were born without ears and you simply appreciate their CD artwork.

By way of comparison, I love Bathory.

Your "I don't really like the generally well-liked bands so I'm going to make a point of it" charade really doesn't do it for me anymore.

First off, I'm not sure who you consider the "generally well-liked bands" to be. Regardless, that's not true. If I didn't share a lot in common with the regular posters here, I wouldn't bother with the forum. Second, a "charade" is an untrue act. I'm not being untrue when I say I dislike Deathspell Omega. I genuinely dislike them. As a matter of fact, I'd say they're one of the worst bands I've ever had the misfortune of hearing. Lastly, I don't much care what does and doesn't do it for you. But you have a nice day just the same.

Deathspell Omega is the perfect example of a band emphasizing ideologies, philosophies, world views over the musical substance. When it comes to black metal, I think the ideologies must be the consequence of the music, not the other way around. In brief, people fall in love with the image surrounding the band (occult, enigmatic, obscure, misanthropic, intellectually penetrating etc.), not with the band itself. I must know, I fell into that trap too. In some cases, the music is strong enough to convey the message by itself, Deathspell Omega's generally isn't.

Not sure where the chip on your shoulder is coming from, and Zod's response obviously speaks for itself, but as an FYI, Zod has enjoyed all of the following on either a large or small scale (and has made a point of saying so on the forum for each and every band):

Primordial/Drudkh/Moonsorrow/Thyrfing/October Falls/Wolves in the Throne Room/Burzum/In Vain/Destroyer 666/Iron Maiden/November's Doom/Immortal/Enslaved/Satyricon/Secrets of the Moon and I'm certain a ton more I'm forgetting.

Every single one of these bands have been "forum" bands on some level at some point in time.

The ideology is part of the music, as it is with any other piece of music, regardless of how irrelevant or superficial the ideology or the music itself is.

That said, the band's aural output stands on its own for me.

The problem arises when the interest comes strictly from a conceptual level. Then, people fool themselves into thinking that the pleasurable experience comes from the music while it comes from the ideas regarding the music. That makes people more interested in menus than actual meals. I agree that ideologies or worldviews are part of the music, but not the whole of it. If music doesn't serves the ideologies, if the content doesn't serve the form...what's the point of it? Anyway, you don't have to agree. I'm just sharing a few thoughts.

Still, all that said, it was a pretty stupid poll, let's act like adults here people. :)

My issue arises from the fact that Zod flaunts his dislike of Bathory in a very tongue-in-cheek manner at every given opportunity, and is attempting to do the same here. I just don't find it amusing.

No offense meant to Zod or yourself, dudes.

A stupid poll? OK.. among the more recent threads on RC are the following:

sexy time in Wacken
Post pics of hot black chics
Tea?
the fuckin weather thread
HD Porn
American Gladiators
KFC - Got Chicken. Got Soul
Viking Beards

With that in mind, I hardly see my comments, regarding my immense dislike of DsO, as less than adult or in not keeping with the spirit of the forum. This is a music forum, I was commenting on music.

I've taken it upon myself to be the counterweight, to what I view as the undeserved worship of Bathory. Granted, it's an exhausting task, but one I intend to carry on with.

Speaking of Bathory, I just got done listening to the first half of Norland I (at JK's recommendation). Had I not known I was listening to Bathory, I wouldn't have guessed. It's drastically different than the works people typically praise and pointed me to. It's now much more clear, just how profound Bathory's influence was.

That said... they still suck.:loco:

None taken.

Zod

EDIT: all kidding aside, I'll definitely give Norland I a few more spins.

Thanks for clarifying - that's just his style though, it's not really meant to do anything other than express a simple opinion (and yes, I know he does it with Bathory frequently, but then again, they are also worshipped frequently around here as well). I suspect that your subjective opinions regarding Bathory and DsO have something to do with your reaction, which is understandable.

Cool - I think your follow up analysis was more spot on than your initial statement, which on a general basis was off the mark.

Next week you'll be slobbering all over Hammerheart. But you'll never admit to it. That'd be like admitting you were wrong
Quite honestly, I think it would be great fun to some day come on here and be able to truthfully confess that I just bought my first Bathory disc. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong. Believe me, I've missed the boat on more than a few bands the first time around.

It wasn't really meant to be responded to since it was clearly one-sided in nature. Just a different way of expressing an opinion (that you obviously didn't care for). Agree or disagree, I'll take it any day over much of the nonsense and instant message type discussions that take place here on a daily basis. It's a forum that should be about music first and foremost and it's become a mere shell of its former self.

And D666 is an absolute perfect example of that. You even started a thread about it highlighting your opinion change.

Don't get me wrong guys, but this forum lost it's reason to be way back when JayKeeley killed the website.

At that moment it became open to become another 'Seriously Off-Topic' forum, complete with its cliques and social clubs, tossing music onto the backburner.

Claiming 'shell of it's previous self' is just annoying, because it's been practically more time after the site's been killed than time with it being active.
