The Gaming Thread

Well Blizzard just announced that WoW hit the 12 million subscriber mark so I doubt WoW is going anywhere soon. Of course that doesn't mean all 12 million accounts are active, but they are being paid for still. Wow still sucks though like most MMO games. Who wants to spend 12 hours harvesting, or sit there and "watch" their player fight... Clicking on something and watching your character go shot for shot with the enemy is really boring, and the only MMO I've palyed that let you get involved in the fight more was Age of Conan which was pretty decent.

Blizzard has serious issues with development time, Torchlight (which is was made by a tiny little team) came out less than a year ago and the Torchlight 2 is already announced for an early 2011 release complete with multiplayer and open areas. That would be like blizzard releasing diablo and Diablo 2 within a year of each other. It would never happen and they have like 10,000 times the resources and manpower.

While they do have extremely long development times you have to realize Diablo 3 was by no means in development or planed after Diablo 2. We also have seen a few gaming generations pass, which extends development cycle for anything that wasn't being worked on before they announced the game a few years back. I personally have no issue with their long development times, its not like they re screwing over the player in any way shape or form by doing so. Quite the opposite, as I can almost guarantee that Diablo 3 with have more than double the investment time / bells and whistles that will make it shine greatly over Torchlight 2. The changes in Torchlight 2 are also much more subtle than a typical sequel. Heck, I think Blizzard deserves respect for NOT barraging the consumer with yearly sequels that offer so little to digest with what has been seen in the gaming industry the last couple years.

Don't get me wrong I'm not actually attacking Blizzard. The truth is I don't think Torchlight or Torchlight 2 will ever live up to the addicting and long lasting appeal of Diablo 1 and 2. Diablo 2 is possibly my all-time favorite game and I was an extremely good dueler on B.net(I rarely met my match as a Barb or Zon). I still think the development times are a bit odd. It seems like Blizzard may be a little on the lax side when it comes to actual work lol. Like what I read about 3D Realms but not as bad.

These little development houses put out a lot more games, probably because they actually have to work their asses off to get their studio off the ground. Once you're rolling in dollars from Halo, WoW, or Fallout 3 you can take your time even announcing that you're working on a game

Aye. Despite my comment about yearly sequels coming straight off after the torchlight comments, I was referencing the CoD's and Guitar Heros of the gaming world.

And yeah, Torchlight, while the same general concept as Diablo, I think is meant to be on a much smaller scale, I doubt they have had the intention of it being much more than a mild, mindlessly fun throwback to earlier dungeon crawlers so no offense to the Torchlight guys either.

Hell I STILL play Diablo 2 at LANs, it's been my group of friends go-to game when we have nothing else to play. Not even mentioning my near fatal addiction to Starcraft... Oh Blizzard, you're finally going back to the great games. I was getting sick of Warcraft releases (I didn't care for either WC3 or WoW... especially WoW) until the mighty Starcraft 2 made me love Blizzard all over.

PowerBlade: You're danish. You suck cock. That's why you don't like the Diablo-games. ^^

Me and my friend ruined the game a couple of weeks ago tho... We used a hero editor.. Think we overdid it.

This is true. I'm using that argument to design a game for one of my modules at university. I can post the game concept document if anyone is interested :p would be nice to get some feedback.

All the games you guys are talking are cool but too underground for me, I'm a mainstream gamer I guess haha. But then there's not much to talk about mainstream games

Probably not but less mainstream than the games I played on Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, Play Station and N64. I guess I can call them mod games?

EDIT: Belac is the one who actually played games I never heard about, you played games I heard about haha.

lol, I didn't think I mentioned anything underground except in my second post in the thread. Well I guess maybe Torchlight is a little since the developer is just starting out, but I imagine they'll be well known in the future.

well if you havent played games frequently the past 10 years or so some of these titles may seem obscure, ive played most of them but theres alway the exception i missed

like deus ex, doubt ill ever play it
