The Greatest Growlers?

mikaels the only guy i like, his growls have an emotional quality to them that i find lacking in others. his growls are richer and have more tonal depth in my opinion.

Yeh Mike is still my most loved vocalist ever, let alone in death metal. Noone else has such a consistant and 'layered' gutteral growl that you can still understand, and his clean vocals are so warm and emotive. He could sing fucking Humpty Dumpty and it would still sound like the saddest song ever written.
The perfect vocalist in my opinion.

Hrm...

Silenius (Summoning)
Tägtgren (Hypocrisy etc.)
Jon Nödtveidt (not that extremely great, but it's good)
Quorthon (Hail Bathory! For the horde!)
Valfar (Windir)
Nergal (Behemoth)
Katla (Old Finntroll)

And then a personal fav. for his light growl, though it's not so great and most people hate him:

Varg Vikernes (Burzum)

First 5 that spring to mind:
Mikael
Sauron
Helmuth
Cult Of Luna bloke (never known his name)
Muhammed from Necrophagist or Jason Mendonca from Akercocke .. either one

I can't believe only two people have said Frank Mullen from Suffocation. He kicks ass. Mikael and Frank are definitely my two favorite death metal vocalists.

Mikeal :the mighty.. opeth)

Raymond I. Rohonyi : Theatre of Tragedy 'velvet darkness they fear'

Lorin Cook: ex - wicked innocence. His newer band which is not death metal, nor does he do his very low vocals. http://orionclock.20m.com/Local_music.html

Dan Swano : edge of sanity,etc...

Aaron Stainthorpe : my dying bride

Sherwood Webber: ex - skinless
Skinless - Enslavement mp3

Morbid Angel - Maze of Torment mp3
Morbid Angel - Chapel of Ghouls mp3

Yeah I think opeths mike has a lot of emotion in his growls, he's not the meanest sounding growler but I think he puts a lot into it emotionally. Check out dying fetus for some sub-human sick growls they are probably the ugliest sounding most sick sounding grolws I have heard.

Oh and old chris barnes stuff "hammer smashed face" not a lot of range, but I am talkin about mean growls.

As much as i dont like him, Dani Filth has such a HUGE range, and while most of his growls are black metal style, he does a pretty damn deep growl from time to time. Also the guy from amon amarth has a good growl.

That is very true. He gets a lot of shit but at the end of the day he has one of the most amazing ranges in extreme vocals. And he goes a long ways toward pulling it off live.

For pure death vocals Mike is by the far the best. And if you aren't very good at it really sounds shitty.

Just try listening to Six Feet Under.

On the whole I prefer the black metal scream do the death growl, but I also prefer Mike's death growl to any black metal screamers I can think.

just wondering,, are these growls really genuine or do they use some kind of effect? my friend is a vocalist in a local death band here, and hes convinced that mikaels growls are not completely genuine,, he says he plugs in a little thingy in the mic to enhance and deepen the growling vocals,, so im just wondering,, is this true ??

at the london gig on the 8th sept, i noticed as mike spoke to the crowd after a song some soft of effect echoed or something through his vocals, am i insane or did any one else notiice?
as for dani filth, he has a custom mike laden with vocal effects
