The most depressing song you can think of.

The most depressing song I can think of is probably Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. It uses the tritone extensively and the tritone is credited as "The Devil's Note" but because the tempo is so low and the singing is so minor based it just gets me really depressed, I dunno.

How about you guys?

Silencer - Sterile Nails And Thunderbowels
Katatonia - Quiet World
Shape Of Despair - Quiet These Paintings Are
Opeth - Hours Of Wealth

Can't think of anymore at the moment...

Shining - Ytterligare Ett Steg Narmare Total Javla Utfrysning is the only one I can think of atm.

Type O Negative - Death in the Family
Anathema - One Last Goodbye (depressing and beautiful all at once)
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - The River Flows Frozen
Riverside - Loose Heart

actually most of the depressing songs i like are beautiful.

Also, Iced Earth's A Question of Heaven makes me feel sad.

Oh, and Candlemasses At the Gallows End.

I really don't think metal is a genre that captures sadness well, given the inherent unsubtlety of most of it. It's dark, sure, but usually in a more inhuman way than in a way that captures emotional frailty, depression, suicidality, etc.

I generally avoid depressing music, but one song that's always seemed to sap me of hope for living is Pink Floyd's "Time" - mainly because of the lyrics.

As far as metal goes, I think Alice in Chains has done some of the most depressing metal songs.
