i love devin's voice but his guitarwork is a friggin joke!his 10 minutte solo on tour with sx was ok , i mean his tecnique sux ass but his improvision was ok!i dont know why people put his music in Prog genre

I'm not a Devin Townsend fan at all.

My vote for most underrated prog musician would be either Michael Pinnella or John Myung, neither of whom is listed.

i dont know why people put his music in Prog genre

beacuse his music is progressive.... just not in a wankfest guitar and keyboard shred battle in 17/8....i consider the prog genre to encompass everything from Pink Floyd to Spiral Architect.....and Devy's solo work falls somewhere in there....in his own little corner.

Not all of his work can really be considered prog, but albums like Terria and Infinity are highly progressive, especially in regards to the arrangements, there's tons of detail in those albums. I'd consider him and Kevin Moore the most talented all-around musicians among the choices in this poll...

I believe this guy, "Red", is the most underrated porg metal musician ever. A multi instrumentalist who can shred on just about every instrument with the best of them, he never ceases to amaze me with his intricate compositions, remeniscent somewhat of a mix of Mozart, Bartok, and Zappa. Its a shame more don't know of him...

Yeah DT is long long overdue for a propper bass solo, either a spot on tour or on an album. Also let the man write lyrics again.

I was watching the train of thought behind the scenes 'writing' video, and JP and MP seem to do almost everything. He seems to be less and less involved in each album :/ although i could've sworn when i first heard 'honor thy father' it sounded like myung wrote a big chunk of it. Maybe he just doesnt say anything when theres a camera around lol.

Concerning devin townsend, ive never got into his music, although its clear he is very innovative with music and lyrics. I havent heard enough of his guitar work to judge him, but im not all that fussed if someone doesnt have chops from hell.

I read somewhere that the reason JM doesn't write lyrics anymore is because he didn't formulate them into the song structure, and the other guys didn't want to have to keep changing them to fit the music. I think it's on they're faq page...here's what it says:
In a recent IRC chat, Mike said the following:

[Portnoy] starting with SFAM, we kinda layed down a new lyric rule....if you are going to present lyrics, they must be properly formed, phrased, constructed, etc. to go with the melodies
[Portnoy] JM's lyrics were always kind of presented in a more free form poetic manner and it was up to us (Kev, JP or myself) to kind of shape them to the song
[Portnoy] to be blatently honest, we wanted everybody to kind of "carry their own weight" when writing lyrics, and since then John has kind of backed off
[Portnoy] the door is always open to him to contribute again if he'd like...

I also would like to hear another bass solo, I think the minimum for bass solos should be one per album, and I would probably also agree that JM is one of the more underrated musicians in porg for being in such a big band.

yeah, it seems as if hes not underrated by the listeners; everyone loves him, but more that hes under rated by his own band! I think portnoy tends to ignore him slightly. So what if they have to take time crafting vocal lines round his lyrics, he wrote great lyrics. Thats comes across as lazyness to me.

I think maybe the reason we think he isn't underrated by listeners is because we see the like twenty people on forums that play bass or like the sound of bass and want to hear more of him. I know personally that when I got the new dvd I watched the instrumedely just on JM at least twice before watching it with everyone else. But back to my point, I think for every JM fan there are ten JP fans and ten MP fans and ten JR fans. But none of them are going to say to you that they don't want to hear JM, so we just hear that people want to hear him. I hope this got the point across, it's a bit of rambling but at least I know what I mean.

But I also think your right, that the rest of the guys when writing songs don't give Myung any solos. I guess it's a combination of a coulple different factors working against us.
For instance, have you noticed on the LSFNY dvd when they get to the bass solo in, I think it's dance of eternity, John actually thanks Mike for giving it to him.

im sure its not hard for DT to make space for a bass solo!maybe he doesnt want to play solos, anyways he doesnt need to play solos cause his bass lines are complex enough(e.g.this dying soul)

Yeah. This is completely unrelated, but I'm not registered on the DT board, and i wanna know if theres any hidden extras on the budokan DVD's. Anyone know how to get them? I dont own live scenes so id really like to hear some kind of commentary.

there isnt any commentary on the budokan DVDs, which was pretty much the reason i got it. on the 5YIALT DVD they said the budokan DVD would, but i guess they should stick to playing music, and not talking and getting our hopes up. meh. budokan is 2 DVDs tho with some crappy bonus features and then some solo spots i think.

Devin songs i like include.....

Truth
Dynamics
Seventh Wave
Life
Regulator
Bastard
Mountain
Earth Day
Deep Peace
The Fluke
Suicide
Away

Anyway, from that list I'd probably go for Kevin Moore - I think DT's downhill journey has a lot to do with his departure.

DT'S DOWN HILL JOURNEY? Have you heard " scenes from a memory"? I would hardly call that down hill. :hotjump:
