"Crazy as hell" is what I don't like about the avant-guard. Most of it's just one big musical non-sequiter.

Though I haven't heard him, I suspected that Glass was a minimalist modern-art type composer who delved into originality for originality's sake alone, so I thought you wouldn't like him. On the other hand, it's not like you to recommend things you don't like either.

GoD, you should listen to Gyorgi Ligeti's Requiem. You should also check out some of Penderecki's works. Some of the modernist stuff is actually quite good.

Langgaard pioneered Ligeti's techniques many years before him. His "Music for the Spheres" is very good.

Penderecki's style just isn't for me. Not that Xenakis's really is, but his "Metastasis" is preferred to Penderecki. It seems less manufactured.

I've been meaning to check out some Xenakis. Demiurge, have you heard any of Penderecki's choral works? A few of them that I have heard are based more on orthodox tonality with some experimentation thrown in for good measure. I'm assuming that you don't care for atonality, micro-tonality, etc.

Look for the CD called "Orchestral Works and Chamber Music." It contains the definitive rendition of Metastasis and generally provides a solid sampling of the composer's work.

I haven't heard very much of Penderecki's choral work, but I'll look into it when I get the chance.

Fratres, Tabula Rasa by Arvo Part and Lamentations & Praises by Tavener might be to your liking. Note that these are not symphonies, but the compositional techniques are similar.

YES! The Umbersun is awesome. btw, have you heard Sunwar the Dead? Is it any good?

I have Sunwar the Dead in mp3's and I still need to give it a proper listen, but it seems very good so far. It is a combination of The Umbersun, Winds Devouring Men, and other influences - credit to them for trying to come up with something new. I can't wait for the last album of this trilogy, it might put this album into perspective.

They also replaced the synths with a complete orchestra and that is certainly an improvement. All in all, a very good release but I need to give it more listens to appreciate it fully.

He can be off-kilter at times, but we're talking one of the forefathers of minimalism here...

I gotta tell ya, one of my all time favorite non-metal albums in Graceland by Paul Simon, but I guess its because i was brought up listening to it because of my parents
