How does one go from dark and atmospheric to COB?

I pretty much went from Megaman soundtracks to COB, natural evolution. Later I've always tried to find as dark and atmospheric stuff as possible, with epicness and a sense of mystery, not necessarily even metal.

None of the samples any of you presented is atmospheric to me. First of all the most atmospheric stuff is not in metal. But here's just a couple examples from metal I find atmospheric, there's like 50 more just from metal...

Musically I've not come a very long way, since I listened to this 20 years ago, and it sound a lot like the new Bodom. Can't believe it's been almost 20 years since I secretly took this game for a test drive with my brother when it was waiting for Christmas eve hidden in a closet. 20 fucking years...
