Well I'm back from my first week of rebuilding my family's dock up in Maine. It was destroyed by an April storm and its remnants were dashed against the rocky shore and shattered. So far we've made good progress rebuidling/repairing the dock's three main components: the pier, the gangway, and the float.

The gangway and most of the pier having been dashed against the shore during the storm. The gangway is intact and will only need to be repositioned. The pier, however, was shattered and a new one is being built with some new wood and parts from the old pier.

The first 16-foot section of the new pier, which juts out into the water (photo at low tide) from the bottom of the stairs up to the house. Assembly took a few hours, thanks to the pneumatic nail-gun.

View from the cove out into the Sheepscot Bay. On the left is the new pier. On the right is the float which was damaged in the storm, with the inflatable dinghy resting on top (thank god it survived).

Working on the float at low tide. In the foreground are the old float drums that were knocked off of the float's bottom and broken. We used a heavy-duty jack to lift up the float at low tide and install 4 brand new float drums. As you can see, the cove is a tidal flat at low tide.

The second section of the new pier in progress. The 12-foot posts had to be dug into the beach soil and perilously connected to the next pair of 16-foot joists. We had to use a ton of rocks to anchor the pier so the incoming tide doesn't carry it away. In the background is the disembodied gangway, which will require a lot of strength to disengage from the rocks.
