well it really sucks for me because this Tower actually stocked a fair amount of underground metal cds (Bathory, Burzum, October 31, etc...), so now I have to drive all the fuck way out to Hollywood and go to Amoeba Records (which is infinitely better, but the drive sucks my asshole raw).

I know this. I like starting people off with those bands, and I am usually succesfull in my quests.

I don't consider Symphony X particularly progressive, and don't really see that term used for them as valid.

I guess they are more power metal than prog, but they certainly have some progressive elements in their music.

mastodon has very strong progressive rock influences (listen to a song like sleeping giant or aqua dementia) along with thrash, hardcore and doom (more in their 1st 2 albums) influences
