The Top 5 List Thread

Awesome movie but better than Terminator II? Worst. Opinion. Ever. :D
It's been forever since I've seen T2, but I thought the Connors were annoying characters, and the kid's friendship with the terminator a cheesy kind of Disneyesque feel-good story. It wasn't as scary or concise as T1. Anyway, Silence of the Lambs is fucking brilliant and perfect.

There Will Be Blood was pretty damn boring.

boring seems like a weird way to describe a movie so intense and off-kilter but ok

NO COUNTRY was my favourite film when i was 19 or so and back then i got pissy at anyone who preferred THERE WILL BE BLOOD, but the latter has only grown for me and i've cooled a little on the former. it's a perfect adaptation though, the coens are geniuses, i just think mccarthy's done better elsewhere where his subtext has been more buried. that book is very on-the-nose about its themes (which rarely works for me in fairness - i guess COSMOPOLIS is an exception but the themes there are so fucking difficult to parse that it matters less), and i think i worshipped the film's worldview more than i worshipped the actual film in retrospect. i do still like it a lot though.

i think that movie ends the only way it possibly can end while staying true to its own worldview, and it was pretty damn ballsy to savagely subvert thriller conventions by concluding it in such a sudden and anti-climactic way (followed by the elegiac monologue).

Probably my fault for desiring a kind of conclusive final moment a la Red Rock West because they're similar tonally. :D

I spent too many years drinking beer and watching gore and action films, I almost feel like only in the last 4 years have I started actually seeing and hearing the films I'm watching and because of this, there's a lot of lag with properly understanding cinema and so on. I feel like a toddler.

My pen is now dried up (no joke) from writing all that shit down.

Has anybody ever looked at someone's favourite films list, seen some things you don't know so you look them up and end up feeling ashamed by the ones you don't know because they look so good?

In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai)
The Twilight Samurai (Yamada)

So far these two made me feel like that.
I have a Maggie Cheung boner right now.

The New World (Malick)
Miami Vice (Mann)

Really surprising to see both these films praised by you. I've been seeing them around and I was always apprehensive to grab them, clearly I should just grab them.

Btw, noticed a bunch of Harry Potter films in your lists. I was about to ask if you were simply scraping the bottom of the choice barrel but then I saw Deathly Hallows in a #1 spot. I didn't realise you were that into Harry Potter.

Sick list. Great use of images. I would like to participate in this game but I haven't seen nearly enough movies unfortunately.

Can't remember if we had this conversation before but would I like The New World, do you think?
