Is that common in Japan? I mean that you can do things like that without some government organ pouncing on you? (Like in most freedom loving western countries)

It's not terribly common but it isn't hard to find either. There are no discrimination laws in Japan, be it against customers, employees, or whoever. And they can do it based on skin, sex, anything they want. Most often you see this at onsen or clubs with signs that say things like "Only Japanese allowed." or "Foreigners only allowed in if escorted and vouched for by a Japanese person." Sometimes they're a little more specific such as "No Russians!" and the like.

Of course that's not true at all. Hell, I was denied entry to an onsen once. Sure, they look up to us in a lot of ways, they think we're all cool, etc but at the same time, they don't give a shit about us. We're outsiders. More than that, we aren't fully people to them so we don't really count. Human rights? That only means for Japanese here, because they're the only real humans.

went to see an acapella group, Almost Recess, perform at the high school the wife teaches at. talk about entertaining. this is music done entirely through voice. so drums, cymbals, bass etc is done by this one guy. talk about talent. he sounds just like those damn instruments. he even did a "drum solo". the others were singers and background instruments or something. they even did "I'm a Believer" in heavy metal style, with falsettos and all.
