to all those who said the same thing as you did: tool are better than apc? in what sense?
tool might be more consistent than apc (since apc released just two good albums, the second one being a bit less interesting than the first) but apc are not into such technical, experimental stuff like, say, vicarious or lateralis. apc have written some fantastic LOVE songs like 3 libras, brena or thinking of you...have tool ever done that? i love tool, but apc used to (and fortunately still does) give me chills and goosebumps unlike tool did. and they did that with ZERO CHEESE, unlike a thousand other rock bands. how about that?

Totally agreed with Don Corleone here, Tool have never written anything as stirring as that duo in the middle of Mer Des Noms (Orestes/Three Libras), and while they're more experimental rhythmwise I guess it's not like APC is radio rock. They have songs in weird time sigs, they just go to lengths to make it sound natural (ex Sleeping Beauty being in 7). Tool isn't bad, but a lot of their stuff comes across as Drop D Powerchord Sludge while APC has a ton of layered guitars and odd effect flourishes and even the occasional non-standard instruments. I love the messed up guitar effects they use on songs like The Hollow and Weak & Powerless. APC does have a large amount of meh material, but their good stuff tops anything Tool's done imo (the aformentioned songs, brena, passive, the noose, etc).
Emotive is not very good overall, but Passive and the cover of What's Going On are incredibly gorgeous and they alone make the album worth listening to, imo. There are a few other pretty good songs on there too.

Tool was my absolute favorite band for a good three years before I started investing absurd amounts of time into Opeth. I like APC but unless you get really into specific lyrics and softer vocals with a ton of feeling, I can't just listen to it over and over. APC does have some pretty interesting guitars but so does Tool if you look at the right songs, sure some of their stuff is coated in power chords but that's mostly Undertow, which should be given credit for the emotion and anger in its vocals (my fav is Intolerance).
Both great bands, from APC my favorites are probably The Package, Magdalena, Pet, Gravity, 3 Libras, and Orestes. From Tool..well I love every song except maybe ######## and all those random sound clips that don't really count as songs (some of those get interesting of course), overall start with any album but Opiate and you'll run into some of their best. Undertow for power chords and lots of palm muting with very emotional and angry vocals on top, Aenima and 10,000 Days for albums packed with great, unique, individual songs (Jambi, Right In Two, Third Eye, and Pushit are my favs from those), Lateralus for experimental and progressive stuff (amazing album, would it be my forum name otherwise? love every song)

Ah, there are not many dedicated Tool/APC fans here obviously. Therefore ill be short.
IMO APC was one of the most refreshing and brilliant bands to emerge in "modern rock", and with their first 2 albums they managed to come up with a number of downright brilliant and meaningful, yet listenable and accessible songs. Really masterful. Billy Howerdel and Maynard were a great songwriting team. I listen to APC regularly to this day.
Tool however is already one of the most important and artistic bands in rock history, regardless of whether wide audience or critics recognize it (as of now!). There's this shift in their songs, true complexity and depth to both their music and lyrics, and i personally see Tool as the single most deserving band to bring sense of fine art aesthetics to rock music. I think anyone who has really given a chance to Tool (which demands repeated listens over a longer period of time) and didnt find anything big is entitled to his opinion, but i also feel that most of the opinions stated here were rather superficial, no offense. Check out Tool for real!

She barely had any impact on the album's sound, as she didn't write any of the songs, did very very quiet backing vocals on like two of them, did strings on one or two of them, and played bass on like 3 songs. Therefore I find it kind of strange to call their first cd the "paz era" like that was the reason it sounded different
I used to like that cd a lot more but I like them about equally now. Thirteenth Step is a lot creepier and has less song variety and I don't think it has any songs to match orestes/3 libras/brena but it barely has any actually weak material on it and it has a lot of great songs.

Word. When I listen to them I almost always put on "The Noose" or "Weak and Powerless"
