I'm still such a noob at metal after like a year and a half, my top stuff for the 2000's are pretty repetitive, though it'll be interesting to see how this list looks in another 6 months, since some modern black and death metal is only just starting to grow on me. Anyone else feel that the 00's haven't come close to the 90's in terms of standard? Is there anyone who prefers the 00's?

I don't think either era really beats the other but rather they're completely different. The 90's with a bit of overflow into 88/89 were the birth of extreme metal while the '00s saw most of the experimentation on such genres with a few exceptions (like Gorguts or w/e being in the 90's). My favorite bands from the 90s would be stuff like early Incantation, Katatonia, Emperor, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, etc. while my favorite stuff from the '00s is mostly progressive/experimental stuff like Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, Enslaved, Negura Bunget, etc. that can't be compared.

I did too. Hadn't realized just how much of what I listen to has come out in this decade untill I started listing albums.

Obviously the 00s are inferior to the 70s, 80s, and 90s for metal because there were no significant innovations.

Only if your only definition of significant innovation is the creation of a new genre that thousands of bands copied. But there's definitely been a lot of progression within the genres we have.
