Top 10 all-time favourite Metal albums

Dude, just about everything Exodus has done would be considered "utter thrash" when compared to From This Day Forward or Nemesis, and that's including BbB .... which is by far one of the most overrated 80's thrash albums of all time. The worst albums from the bands i mentioned shit on just about everything exodus has done.

Bonded By Blood is a gem of the highest order, I stand by that opinion, the rest of their albums I couldn't care less about.

Don't really care about what's overrated either, sentiments like that tend to distract one from what's important; whether you genuinely like the album or not.

Here are just a few debut thrash albums from the mid 80's that are far better than BBB. Killing is My Business, Show No Mercy, Kill Em All, The Legacy, Power and Pain, Infernal Overkill, Fear of Tomorrow, Torment in Fire, Endless Pain , Feel the Fire etc.

In other words, BbB is an album that i rarely reach for, and that's coming from someone who listens to thrash(;)) religiously.

hah! Can't argue with that.

Well the reason I consider it overrated is because I don't think it's that good of an album. As in I think it's widely rated higher than it should be, soooo ....

I agree about Slayer, Metallica and Destruction having better debuts, not that it's saying much since they released masterpieces, disagree with the rest, especially Megadeth but admittedly I'm not a fan in general.

That's all pretty irrelevant to me in regards to whether Bonded By Blood is a gem of the highest order, comparing one great album to a bunch of other great albums doesn't prove anything.
Just so happens, with exception to Show No Mercy, that I prefer Slaughter's Strappado to everything mentioned thus far, doesn't mean everything else is bad.

Yea well i dont consider that album to be "great", it's not even in the same ballpark as the albums i mentioned imo. So to me it's faaar from comparing one great album to another. But hey, to each their own. Oh and i never said it was a "bad" album.

Also, you don't like Killing is my Business??? lol wtf man. When was the last time you listened to it? Maybe you should give it another shot. It's one of the greatest thrash albums of all time. Shits all over BbB in every single fucking aspect.

About a year ago? I own the first three Megadeth albums, I will give them another try soon for sure, I'm always challenging my own opinions, but as it stands right now I don't get the appeal.
I unequivocally prefer Bonded By Blood.

1) slayer - hell awaits
2) slayer - reign in blood
3) slayer - show no mercy

+

destruction - sentence of death EP
exodus - bonded by blood
holy terror - terror & submission
metallica - ride the lightning
metallica - ...and justice for all
sepultura - beneath the remains
voivod - killing technology

or something. half of these are majorly flawed but there are hardly any wall to wall classics in this genre imo. there's some first wave BM type stuff that could be deemed thrash which'd probably get in there.

BbB is easily my favourite exodus but it's not like i shit on all the others (generally not fond of the new stuff, it must be said, but i've given FABULOUS DISASTER in particular a ton of playtime over the years). that's not what you said anyway, you suggested i'm elitist enough to pretend it's their only acclaimed album, which you just pulled out of nowhere. it's certainly their MOST acclaimed album, but they have plenty of others, that isn't really disputable.

that doesn't really matter to me, there's still a strong 'satanic' element no matter how gleeful or glib, not just lyrically but in terms of the overall sound. i think you're underplaying how much it contributes to their identity and appeal, particularly when compared to pantera who lay their more down-to-earth brand of machismo on pretty thick.

i actually enjoy rousing RAISE THE HORNS METAL BROTHERS UNITE type stuff in general, that isn't in itself on the list of things i don't like about pantera. i don't see exodus as aggressive in the same way, they have a heightened, b-movieish quality that's more in line with the fantastical strain of heavy metal i enjoy the most.

tis pretty damned awesome innit

In that case, Fabulous Disaster is full of tuff-guy stuff, especially the Corruption/Verbal Razors/Open Season trifecta.

As early as 1985 Exodus was saying that they thought black metal and the whole Satanic thing was a joke. It may have been part of their sound very very early on, but mostly it was just to shock people and jumping on the Venom train. Their primary appeal is to the FRASHER crowd.

I don't really see what genuine belief behind lyrics has to do with anything, I bet the vast majority of satanic lyricism isn't an extension of genuine belief.

The point is that the primary purpose behind Exodus' lyrics, since their beginnings, have been to instill a machismo/tough-guy attitude. I'm still waiting for examples of these Pantera lyrics unlike Exodus'.

Okay.
Well, the argument about lyricism seems redundant, Thrash is aggressive and aggression tends to manifest itself as macho, why aren't you guys arguing about sonic similarities?

Anyway, my ten favourite (probably not considered purely Thrash) Thrash Metal albums are;

Slaughter's Strappado
Slayer's Show No Mercy
Sodom's Persecution Mania
Dark Angel's Darkness Descends
Infernö's Utter Hell
Onslaught's Power From Hell
Bulldozer's The Day of Wrath
Infernäl Mäjesty's None Shall Defy
Gehennah's Hardrocker
Voïvod's Rrröööaaarrr

Honourable mentions;

Kreator's Pleasure To Kill
Sabbat's History of a Time to Come
NME's Unholy Death
Sepultura's Schizophrenia
Mutilator's Immortal Force
Minotaur's Power of Darkness
Pestilence's Malleus Maleficarum

(Do you guys consider Seven Churches a Death Metal album or a Thrash Metal album?)

Edit: I had to change my list due to a massive brainfart in priority.

Seven Churches is both imo, but easily mentionable in a thrash list. Not really less thrash than Strappado or Hell Awaits anyways.

Top 10 would be

Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly
Artillery - By Inheritance
Aspid - Extravasation
Coroner - No More Color
Destruction - Eternal Devastation
Anacrusis - Reason
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Realm - Endless War

Lists are cool.

Slayer - Hell Awaits
Infernäl Mäjesty - None Shall Defy
Rigor Mortis - Rigor Mortis
Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare
Razor - Evil Invaders
Destruction - Infernal Overkill
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Dream Death - Journey Into Mystery
Coroner - Punishment For Decadence
Sadus - Swallowed in Black
