Varg's ordeal
Jethro Tull wins the grammy

The whole glam hair thing.... Whatever started that. :zombie:

There's 10, but there are a few other good ideas in the thread as well.

1) Jimmy Page assumes 'ownership' of the New Yardbirds and imagines a change in musical direction. Peter Grant is soon hired as manager and the search for talent commences. Within months, two young unknowns named John Bonham and Robert Plant are signed on...

2) Earth decides that the blues are being beaten to death by scores of other British whites and opt for a decidedly anti-hippy, heavier-than-death musical vision. After weekend visit to the local cinema and a devilishly named Boris Karloff movie, music will never be the same...

1 black sabbath starts :notworthy
2 black sabbaths' first CD is for sale:)
3 Metallica and Slayer start the thrash metal movement
4 death metal starts
5 black metal starts
6 AC/DC, Metallica, Slayer (i believe), and Iron Maiden play at the donington castle
7 churches are burnt in Norway
8 Varg Vikerns is enjailed
9 ...
10...

but above all, I bought Kill 'em All, most impressive event of history:rock:

Consuming Impulse said:
Actually Anthrax created thrash. They formed before Slayer and Metallica.

Actually, they were more of a straight-ahead Metal band, which is evident in their first LP, Fistful of Metal. Their sound - as well as Slayer's, who met Metallica in Anaheim, CA - didn't change significantly until after being introduced to Metallica in New York. Metallica at the time were already promoting their demo, No Life 'Til Leather, when they were influenced by Jon and Marsha Zazula to go to Rochester, New York, USA to play. They were later signed as Megaforce's first band on the label roster a few days later.

If anyone could be given more credit for "creating" the Thrash Metal movement and it's associated rhythms and styles, we can probably credit (blame?) Venom with their release in 1982 of Black Metal, especially with songs such as Black Metal, Heaven's On Fire and Acid Queen, or back even further with songs like Angel Dust, Poison and Witching Hour (written in 1979-81). Venom were also a huge influence on Metallica and 1985 saw Metallica opening for Venom.

Anthrax didn't really start getting "thrashy" until the Armed and Dangerous EP and then Spreading the Disease.
