TOP 5....METAL GUITARISTS..

dflguy

Madhouse Escapee
i have never been a big fan of lead guitar, i'm more a heavy crunching rhythm guy (ie. the Scott Ian Stomp), but there are a few who totally blow my mind, here are my top five
1 Dan Spitz. everytime i hear his solos on S.O.E, i can just visualize the huge grin that must be on his face. it sounds like he's having a ton o fun with them.

2 Dime. goes w/out saying. i was lucky enough to have seen him twice and both times my ears were ringing for three days. guess i shoulda worn earplugs, but they probably woulda just fallen out in the pit anyways.

3 Zak Wyld. i have heard that in real life, he is little more than a stinky obnoxious tool, but that man can jam!

4 I would like to put Andreas Kisser on here as he is excellent and in my favorite band for life, Sepultura, but, i have to put down Mr. Bobby Hambel, formerly of Biohazard. again, i was lucky enough to catch him in '96, with Slayer and Machine Head, the guy's stage aerobics and live playing are I-M-P-R-E-S-S-I-V-E, to say the least

5 Kerry and Jeff. i know they're two guys, but they play off each other and you couldn't really have one without the other. i don't usually like their solos, but for the note for note proficiency when they're live, they gotta be on this list

how can u tell i have a lot of time on my hands at work?

Here are my top five (in no particular order):

Randy Rhoads - He died way too young, but what he gave us influenced a whole generation of metal guitarists.

Dimebag Darrel - Totally unique player, monster riffs and instantly recognizable solos.

Alex Skolnick - Of all the thrash bands of the mid to late 80's, he was the most melodic of them all and wrote some jaw-dropping solos.

Zakk Wylde - whether or not you like him, you can't deny his skills.

Criss Oliva (Savatage) - underrated guitarist with killer riffs and amazing solos who again died too young.

Honourable mentions - John Petrucci, George Lynch, Rocky George, Paul Gilbert

My top five metal? heh heh heh heh
1. Dimebag. Nuff said. If the great Steve Vai can say "he can shred better than I can, his chops are amazing" then he is #1 for all eternity.

2. Kirk Hammet/James Hetfield. As of late his solos dont blow my mind, but up until the Loads, he was my #1. Second only to Dimebag (IMO). Although not a metal soloist (JH), I do like his solos when he does them. Like Kirk, alot of bluesy stuff, soulful.

3. Kerry King. You instantly know who he is as soon as you hear that first note, and for me his solo's are memorable.

4. Alder (Lamb of God). I like what he does, for me its something fresh although others might think its all re-hashed Slayer.

5. Scott Ian. Stomp stomp stomp, and he has a tone that just crushes. I would like to see him with a Jackson Soloist (or even his old ESP) again, but thats just me.
5.5. Andreas Kisser. Just because I love Sepultura and I have the tribal S tattoo.

I'll split my fav's in two categories:

Freaks of nature: Chris Broderick, Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Jeff Loomis and Michael Romeo

Bludgeoning cement mixing machine like right wrist: Scott Ian, Dave Mustaine, Jon Schaeffer, Chuck Schuldiner (ok so he was a good soloist as well...) and James Hetfield

I totally agree with you about Dans solos on S.O.E. I love all of the solos on that cd! They just fuckin fit perfect and flow

James Hetfield (down picker from hell)
Michael Schenker (70's/80's hard rock god and killer tone)
Rich Ward (the man behind the mojo)
Wolf Hoffman (I heard he played all the guitar parts on the "Restless and Wild" album)
Dave Murray (my favorite Maiden axe man)

Dimebag
CHUCK SCHULDINER
James Hetfield--nobody can touch the punch of his rhythm playing
Mustaine--he and Het OWN metal riffing
James Murphy

There are so many good ones, 5 isn't enough; Davey Murray is criminally under-rated, but I also think Jan Gers is under-appreciated, and unjustly criticised by the die-hard fans.
