top 5 non-metal albums of all time

I want to do an updated list, in no order:

Swans - White Light from the Mouth of Infinity
Nico - Desertshore
Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
Queen - Queen II
Coil - Horse Rotorvator

Rush - Grace Under Pressure
The Offspring - Smash
Pink Floyd - The Wall (though Animals is creeping up there)
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Van Halen - 1984

I would probably change Van Halen and The Offspring and put these in their places:

Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Steely Dan - not sure what yet because all their shit is awesome

maybe:
Faith No More - Album of the Year
Deep Purple - Stormbringer

I don't consider Deep Purple to be a heavy metal band and I know I'm in the minority.

What about Grace Under Pressure puts it on your list? I think that's a fairly weak entry for Rush.

Still #1. I think it's their best all around release and the most consistent one (crimsonfloyd agrees with me). It's still my all time favorite Rush album. I had a choice at a record store between GUP and Moving Pictures to take home and chose the former. I find it THAT good. No duds on the album at all (unlike some of the earlier records which could have had stuff left off or songs I found that meandered to the end). It's a bit darker than most of the other Rush records and sets a very contemplative mood for me when I listen to it.

It hit me like none of the other albums did. Moving Pictures and 2112 are still in my Top 6-7 though. I do know that I need to listen to the late 80s and 90s albums more than I do now and properly rank those.

I find all Rush releases to be good, but GUP tops them all to me. Distant Early Warning is easily my favorite Rush song of all time with Red Barchetta a close second.

The band themselves consider the album their most satisfying release and it was self produced. In and of itself, the last point means nothing but all three members of that band aren't going to release something unless they find it at least somewhat passable. Given they are all perfectionists as well, it's better than 'passable' when viewed in the context of their entire discography.

#1 Rush albums by decade

70s: Hemispheres
80s: Grace Under Pressure
90s: Counterparts
00s to now: Vapor Trails and this is because I had a better appreciation for the album after reading Neil Peart's book about the trip he took when the band broke up. Saw it differently after that.

I'm still warming to Clockwork Angels and Snakes and Arrows is good but it is definitely their 'jam band' album if you want to put it that way. Lots of good stuff, but you could tell they just wanted to put songwriting in the back for a while and just see what came up in the sessions.

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
Foetus - Nail
The Jesus Lizard - Goat
Scratch Acid - The Greatest Gift (a discography comp in case that disqualifies it)
Yes - Fragile

Nice bump.

King Crimson - In the Court
Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Camel - Moonmadness
65daysofstatic - The Destruction of Small Ideas

I barely even listen to non-metal nowadays so I acknowledge that my list probably sucks. In the Court is the best album ever though. So blatantly magical and amazing, I cannot process that there are people who aren't completely blown away by it. Is there anything more euphoric than the opening of the title track, coming on after all that ambient doodling in Moonchild?

Tom Waits - Bone Machine
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session
Mazzy Star - She Hangs Brightly

That wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Although if I were to try and add more I'd probably start having some inner conflicts.

Very interesting Rush post Ozz. For what my opinions worth, Power Windows is my top pick from the "synth era", if you will but Grace Under Pressure is excellent. Hold Your Fire is the one I need to revisit soon. "Time Stand Still" and "Second Nature" are amazing songs but nothing else from that album really jumps out at me.

I totally agree with Hemispheres and Counterparts being their best from the 70's and 90's respectively. Test For Echo I find to be a bit underrated. Also interesting that you consider Snakes and Arrows "jam bandy". I've never really thought of that album in that way.

Because I'm seeing pretty much all rock.

Remove Queen II by Queen and White Light from the Mouth of Infinity by Swans from my list and add
Substrata by Biosphere and Treasure by Cocteau Twins.

Probably something like

Chaka Khan - S/T
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson - Winter in America
Kate Bush - Never for Ever
Yapoos - Yapoos Keikaku

Although most Funkadelic is pretty much rock music even still so yeah. I don't listen to enough classical to easily give favorites, but I love [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Bela-Bartok-Quartets-Emerson-Quartet/dp/B000001G9O]this[/ame] 2CD of Bartok's string quartets probably as much as anything mentioned above. In general finding the specific performance I prefer most of a composition is the time-consuming part.

Emerson Quartet is great--their performance of Ives' quartets is the best I've heard. My favorite performance of Bartok's 4th string quartet is by the Zehetmair Quartet. I also have a vinyl of the Juliard Quartet performing Bartok's 4th quartet, among others, which is very good.
