TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2003 (per Staff Writer)

Just because you listen to an album more doesn't necessarily make it a better album.
The nod was given based on how much I truly enjoyed the album, as opposed to how original the album was. If JayKeeley would have asked me a few days prior, I would have picked Goatsblood due to the originality. Two weeks ago, it would have been Mörk Gryning because of their incorporation of several divergent musical styles.

So in other words, it was pretty much the flip of a 3-sided coin to determine which album got the spot.

i got it from the end about 5 months ago... i hear that it's been pretty hard to find since they ran out. ebay, possibly? one of my friends ordered it recently, but i don't know for the life of me where from. i'll try to find out next time i talk to him.

if you liked "tuonela", this one will be worth checking out. it has a more rock/catchy sort of sound, so beware (even though it is much better than am universum). i love it, though. they've written some of their best riffs (although in a diferent style, obviously, than their godly early albums).
It's $21 at The End, and appears to be even more on EBAY. I guess I'll hope for a domestic release. I really like Tuonela.

I don't base an album strictly on originallity. Enjoyment also has to be a factor. When I decide how good an album truly is I have to look at several things. I ask myself these questions?

Is it original?

Does it bring anything new or different to its respective style/genre?

Does it challenge me?

Does it challenge itself?

Will I like this 5 years from now? (That's usually hard to answer.)

How deep does it take me? (In other words, does it just tickle my tummy, or does it really make me lose myself in its atmosphere.)

Do I feel it deep in my bones?

What would Jared do?

To me, enjoyment comes from fulfilling the above questions (or at least some of them). However, I do like stuff just becuase it is fun to listen to. Nevermore, In Flames, etc.

Do I feel it deep in my bones?
That probably accounts for 75% of my decision, the other 25% is a mixture of your other questions among other things. Although originality is pretty subjective as to how much it brings to the table.

This is assuming that I did not consult Jared on any album of course, as I go along 100% with whatever he would decide.

originality > "fun-ness"
You have no soul my friend.

EDIT: If I made a list based primarily (or strictly even) on originality, all but King Crimson and Negura Bunget would have been dropped, and stuff like Aborym,Goatsblood, Sulaco, Ephel Duath, Nuclear Rabbit, etc. would have replaced it.

That would have been a great list.

I tend to enjoy the albums that are harsh or hard to get into for most mortals. I almost seem to like to torture myself. Go listen to Curse of the Golden Vampire and tell me why I couldn't stop listening to it for 2 weeks. That's an album that is designed for a mere one or two listens every week or two . . . or it might just be designed to scare everybody out of your house when the party's over.

Yeah, but then it gets pedantic after a while. You'd have a top 10 list for most original albums, a top 10 list for most progressive, a list for death metal with a twist of black, and so on.

At the end of the day, the one and final list should just include all the albums that kicked your ass the most. \m/

Which is exactly why my list turned out the way it did.

BWD, I hope your soul did not inhabit that comic book when it was torn asunder... if it was you should go pick up that Goatsblood album as you could truly appreciate it at this point.

if i think today is the day are rambling, messy and directionless, what in the hell would i think of goatsblood???
Don't buy it.
note: i enjoy listening to today is the day every now and then
Buy it.

You are clearly torn, but if you ever start enjoying Sadness Will Prevail I would certainly recommend Goatsblood.

OK I'll do an assessment of our lists just because it be fun:

BWD - I'm surprised about you having Aborym at #1 to be honest - you know why? I don't think I've ever even seen you mention that you liked it! When I saw that at #1, I was like, huh? From what I've heard of the Aborym CD, it does sound really good, but I only listened to it once before shipping the promo off to NAD. Otherwise, good list, no other huge surprises and I'm glad you like the Windir album. Hope you have some Einherjer.

CHIEF B - A list that was expected so good for him. Looks like he had a good year since his top three were outstanding releases (in that vein) and I bet he was torn between how he positioned them. I heard that Nightfall, and it's melo-death with a darkwave gothic edge so it's cool he never went for the "Mors Principium" or "Nightrage" factory line output. King Diamond was spot on, as was his interview with the living legend.

ERIK - Almost never gets it wrong in his general recommendations as far as I'm concerned, although I think Death Angel are better than Dark Angel. :) I own almost every album in his list: Skepticism will grab me next year, and I've mentioned that previously. Had I got this album earlier in the year (when 2003 was looking dismal), I would have had more time to absorb it; Nokturnal Mortum is FANTASTIC, but it's an EP and technically not allowed....but that's fine; Drudkh is indeed excellent but I've only had it for a week or so; Rob Darken's vocals kill Graveland for me, but sounds like he's improved them for this release; I loved Xasthur's Nocturnal Poisoning so I'll be getting the new one; MAKES ME PROUD that Sir Erik can see the genius in Maiden, Steve Harris, and co (including Gers). ;) Go Erik.

EVIL C - A guy (npearce - see our About Us page!!) who likes Heavy Metal. He probably really does eat metal and shit chains. I'm looking forward to getting more reviews in from the guy once his working life calms down a bit. Could be Chief B's good friend if they didn't live 3000 miles apart.

JAYKEELEY - This fucker included all the albums he enjoyed the most. I could have predicted each one of his entries easy. And goddamn is he good looking.

NAD - Came in to RC when Gugs and Dark One had to part ways (& still our brothers in arms, as is the way with RC), and reminds me of how Peter Gabriel once described Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (a Quwali singer): "Part Bhudda, Part Demon". The list was as expected to be honest, and so no real surprises, except that in 4 weeks from now, he will be kicking himself in not having included Mithras in his list. And Crimson II a disappointment??? No way dude!

PAPA JOSH - A little surprised by some of his entries: King Diamond never even made his top 25?? And I honestly would have thought Cradle of Filth would have been top 5 material for him. If memory serves me right, that was his first 10/10 review for RC. Not heard many of his choices, but Haste and Alchemist have me intrigued. And in case he forgot, there is not a single moment on Crimson II that even comes close to "Paschendale" or "Montsegur". :loco:

"Part Bhudda, Part Demon"
I guarantee I'll refer to this compliment for years to come, thanks!

I only have two surprises out of everyone's top 10:

1) BWD picking Aborym for top spot, because yes, never heard him talk about it. It's a good album, and I've actually set it aside from the massive dustbin of promos to listen to it more, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

2) That I'm the only one to have Antimatter in their list! I figured this one would blow a lot of minds across the board, but I guess not.

3) Morbid Angel
- Oh lord! It's time to call it a day for these guys. They're being embarrassed by all their clones.
I am really surprised at this as I think MA are beter than ever. The new one has been in my car ever since I bought it about a month ago.

But then again I am into more of the "old school generic stuff" more so than you guys :)

You guys should have some links to song samples from some of those Top 10 CD's .. so lazy asses like me can get some samples easily.

And yes, I agree Erik's list interests me at most and will probably look into finding out more about those bands.

Also realized that most of the CD's in your lists were never reviewed on RC ... very frustrating when trying to find the bands > websites > song samples
