TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2003 (per Staff Writer)

EP's are generally shorter than LP's, but that doesn't make them EP's and/or LP's.

EP's simply don't contain the fully funded material a label pays a band to record. EP's are made on smaller budgets and often times include stuff a label wouldn't want to pay a band to put on a full lengther.

Two exellent EP's for 2003 are Agoraphobic Nosebleed 'Altered States of America' (100 songs on a 3" CD, 21 minutes long) and Old Man Gloom 'Christmas Eve I & II'.

Terrorizer allows EP's in their top 40 for the year.

I think the distinction between EPs and LPs depends on the music involved, as Dreamlord pointed out, when a band specializes in shorter songs, a forty-minute album isn't going to seem as incomplete as one of the same length by a band known for more epic material. Of course, whether the length is considered to be a flaw at all is up to the listener.

There were two excellent EPs this year, Ulver - A Quick Fix of Meloncholy and Primus - Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People. Vowels was probably in my top 3 songs this year, and the Primus EP came with the most thoroughly put together DVD I've ever seen and probably ever will see. Not to mention it was their best material since Pork Soda (1993).

I generally leave EPs and live albums out of my Top XX for the year though.

It's not that big a deal with EP's. Obviously you can use your discretion, like The Taste of Victory being 'full length', but on the flip side, it wouldn't have been a great idea to include something like The Gathering's "Monsters" EP with four variations of the same song, or Crom's "The Fallen Beauty" EP containing 2 songs and a Bathory cover. I mean, the general EP isn't a "full length studio album" and that's why we agreed on no EP's just to make it simple.

In addition, we agreed on no live albums, but Chief B included Burning Down the Opera, but it really doesn't matter if indeed that was one of the albums that kicked his ass.

Whatever's simpler is always best.

Here's my list (probably not final :D):

The Devin Townsend band - Accelerated Evolution
Falkenbach - Ok nefna tysvar ty
Anathema - A natural Disaster
Paysage d'hiver/Vinterriket - Split LP
Nokturnal Mortum - A Taste of Victory
Negura Bunget - N'crugu Bradului
Ulver - A quick fix of Melancholy EP
Rivendell - Elven Tears
Enslaved - Below the Lights
Katatonia - Viva Emptiness

Honorable Mentions: Opeth - Damnation; Bathory - Nordland II; Kamelot - Epica; Radiohead - Hail to the Thief; Maiden - Dance of Death

"of course Erik has the most "black" of the lists. He also has very little variation in the style of music he likes (all though he might not see it that way). "

I don't remember who said this, but I don't agree. Erik has a much too wide taste in music and likes lots of music which may not be bad but not worth listening to as there's better stuff around. Then again, all of you people like lots of crap...

Well, with regards to the actual lists themselves, I would think that Erik, Chief B, and Evil C have the most 'consistent' lists (give or take). As it goes, I would say that Papa Josh has the most varied list by far: Vital Remains, Akercocke, Haste, Dream Theater, and Living Color all in the top 10.

*hats come off*

Thank you for noticing.

Actually, I'm surprised it wasn't pointed out sooner! :loco:

Glad somebody makes sense around here.

I consider myself to have pretty varied taste, very much so compared to people like Sorath who like 1) thrash and 2) black metal (and perhaps Bathory's viking albums, but that's stretching it really.) I like bands from pretty much any metal genre you could come up with except for power metal (though I do enjoy the occasional Nocturnal Rites song; they're not as gay as most, and besides I'm allowed to like 'em because they're from my hometown) and really brutal death metal (though again, I enjoy Nile, so...) Other genres I'm not that much into is traditional doom (but I like Candlemass!) and grindcore (then again I like Nasum and can stomach early Carcass.) I'm fuxxing open-minded, I tell you. :p I also listen to stuff like Tenhi and Nothing and Neptune Towers which isn't even metal (but metal-related, yeah...)

That being said, I'm very surprised that I have like 60%+ of the votes in the "whose top 10 do you most agree with" thread, seeing as my list probably has the highest percentage of fairly obscure bands. I'm happy to see that people agree with me though, that must mean that plenty of smart people frequent these boards ;)

Erik knows I listen to what he says about bandsm,m but if he sasys tehy'sre totall good like skeptisickm i know its fuxof i like mayhehm nifelheim testament metallica

That Aborym album is still awesome, but in no way was it #1 of that year. Windir? Amorphis? WTF was I thinking?!?

If I had to re-do that list "Choirs of the Eye" would be #1. "Kivenkantaja" would probably be top 5.

It'd be cool to go back and re-do some of these lists, but it would probably cause much head exploding.
