Top ten bands that ruined metal in your opinion

I see nobody read the artical which was stupid in concept.

Too many bands ruined metal
Too many sub genres ruined metal
Melodic European powermetal ruined metal
Death Metal ruined metal
Black Metal ruined metal
symphonic power metal ruined metal
retards with microphones ruined metal
grunge ruined metal

metal as a whole sucks

I stopped reading the article after seeing Black Sabbath on the #1 spot..wtf?

Not a bad article at all. They're focusing on the iceberg tip of metal -- the stuff that breaks onto radio and TV and all that. Maybe I'm jaded but I think it's a given that most of that stuff will be bad. My list of bands that ruined metal would focus on the bands that ruined 'good metal.'

Near the top of my list would be Emperor. Good band but if you hate Dimmu and Cradle of Filth, you can thank Emperor for that. Black metal was all stripped back and esoteric (in the best way possible) until Emperor came along and decided it should have beefy typical metal riffs and epic rah rah orchestras. They did it well enough but it was a recipe for the destruction of Black Metal's best aspects.

ACTUALLY black metal pretty much died once kerrang did that exposé on the big 3

edit: in liek '94 or something. other countries got wind of the scene and decided 2 modify the BM formula 2 suit their own ends and consequently watered the genre down into a cesspool of suicidal basement poetry + 4 track recorders

That didn't really have much to do with Black Metal's sound. I don't care how popular it is or how many of its great artists are in jail, it still has the potential to stay good. I mean, I agree with where you're coming from, but I do believe Emperor deserves the biggest blame for steering Black Metal down that road.

The way I understood it was a reverse psychology kind of thing and it amounts to no more than a most important bands in metal. So it hits on bands that made a contribution in the various directions metal took.

well ya i edited my last post but for posterity i'll say that once the whole thing got out then other countries chipped in with their own sound (some of it is cool dont get me wrong) + essentially diluted the genre down into all sorts of diff bm styles most of which suck

What a terrible, pointless article. So Nine Inch Nails helped to ruin metal because their non-metal music may have influenced other non-metal bands. :zombie:

Seriously, what's the point in trying to place blame on bands who may or may not have influenced bands whom you don't like? I don't know why people are fascinated and fixated with bands they don't like...

I think it's not that they hate the bands, it's that they influence lot of bad bands. They did have some bands in that list that were not metal at all. I would have replace theme with metal bands like Venom and Iron Maiden.

What about Burzum? Varg must be the biggest reason why there's so many uncool, trendy poseurs in black metal. They were influenced by him. Not to mention the thousands of generic, unoriginal Burzum-clones that I don't enjoy listening to because they sound too much like Burzum, must have been influenced by Burzum.
