Truly messed up films

Irreversible is probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen. The ten minute ultra-violent and ultra realistic rape scene nearly made me vomit.

I've seen most of the movies mentioned here and this is the one that still bothers me the most. And it's equally notable for the fact that it is a good film not just mindless torture porn like a lot of the others mentioned.

I completely agree. I'd also suggest some other Takashi Miike movies:

Gozu: This one is at least as disturbing as Visitor Q, but it's slower. Like Visitor Q, it sticks in your head forever.

Ichi the Killer: Rather the gory kind of disturbing, but great nevertheless.

Izo: It bored me to be honest, but it is fucked up.

And also, the "Box" segment of Three Extremes.

Irreversible is the only film I've ever seen that made me feel at all bad, the rape scene and the fire extinguisher scene anyway.

Films like Salo, Zombie Holocaust, Last House On Dead End Street, I Spit On Your Grave, Subconcious Cruelty, Visitor Q, Guinea Pig xxx, August Underground xxx, blablabla are all just silly and only worth watching when intoxicated tbh. Even then comedy shit like the Troma films and softcore porn such as Flesh Gordon/Sex Files are way better.

I haven't seen anyone mention El Topo, Haxan, Holy Mountain, Happiness, Baise-moi, Island of Death, Sex and Fury or The New York Ripper yet and they usually appear in threads like this so people might be interested in them.

Criterion finally re-released it on DVD this past summer. Obviously it dosen't come close to the book in terms of debauch but it's an interesting adaptation.

Pfft. Sucky movie way to polished and characters that just are there, you don't get attached to them in any way.

Better movies in the same vein is Christiane F - We Children From Bahnhof Zoo or the documentary Black Tar Heroin (The Dark End of the Street).

If animated movies can count as messed up how about Urotsukidoji?
