I'd say "Bleak" is probably the best first song to hear. If you like what you hear, nothing can beat hearing a whole album though.

Hm... it was my fourth. I heard "Patterns in the Ivy" first (yeah!), then "Harvest." Then, I bought Blackwater Park, so "The Leper Affinity" and finally "Bleak."
I also would like for you to give me a description of what each song is about, so I could get to know them better.
bleak is about mikael shopping at walmart.
he picks up the tomato sauce then decides that he doesnt really want it, so he puts it back and decides on the bbq sauce.
at the checkout he pays by cash.
You forgot to mention that he had to dig extra hard in his pockets to get rid of some pocket change instead of breaking a crisp new 10.

Try to get your hands on a full album, and sit down with the lyrics and listen to the whole thing. Blackwater park is a good choice, there's a fair bit of variety in the songs, but it still flows very well and feels complete and solid.

Okay I just listened to the song Blackwater Park and here are my two cents. Well I did find the instrumental part kinda interesting. But as for the lyrics, well I was reading the song's lyrics on www.darklyrics.com as I played the song on Windows Media Player, and I have to say that I found the theme quite strange.
