Opeth have better vocals and a darker overall feeling. I find them to be a better band than DT on Still Life, MAYH and half of Blackwater Park. Not counting Damnation that's my fav Opeth album though 'cause it doesn't suffer from their usual syndrome. Images & Words is definitely way better than newer Opeth though.

Funny, though.. I used to be a dream theater fanatic... Now I find their music pretentious, boring technical masturbation with no feeling or emotion whatsoever so I guess when you say their "structure" is better than opeth, I get sad

later dream theater is hit or miss for sure with exactly what you're talking about. a few good songs here and there but overall very annoying since they show potential once in a while and then go into endless wank mode anyway. Images & Words however has great structure I think, especially Pull Me Under and Metropolis. they're very technical but still manage to have a solid pace and good structure as full songs.

I agree with you about Images and Words.. It is a great record, possibly DTs best.. I really like some of those songs, but emotionally and dynamically Opeth > Dream Theaters but I suppose that is subject to ones opinion

Funny, I was listening to Awake the other day and thought exactly the same thing. Makes me a bit sad though, never thought there was coming a day when I'd think that.
