Viking Metal

Einherjer. Fucking best Viking Metal band since Bathory.

Their not really Viking Metal are they? They sing about Vikings, but they don't really have any of the folk elements typical of Viking Metal.

They have they're own style..sorta add a viking touch to they're Melodic Death Metal.

Still I would call Amon Amarth Melodic Death Metal (and pretty darn heavy MDM at that) rather than Viking Metal. Maybe Viking Melodic Death Metal? Genre's do take the piss thesedays... New Wave Progressive Melodic Death-Core... :erk:

They don't add any stylistic 'viking' touch at all, they merely have lyrical content about vikings.

this song progresses through as a good example of aspects found in viking metal: acoustic guitar, chanting/hymns, folk instruments, West-European folk melodies, female vox, and that magnificent tribal war-cry vocal signature of viking metal that's almost like European variation of a rather 'thrash' style vocal, then (not included in this clip) a more Black Metal sort of vocal.

...everything Amon Amarth lacks --- I love them, one of the best melodic death bands ever to exist, but they have nothing I love about viking metal.

Can someone recommend some more alcohol/punk/rock oriented stuff along the lines of Einherjer's Odin Owns Ye All?

I'd take Ensiferum over Bathory (the viking metal Bathory, anyway) any day. I personally find that most of Hammerheart is straight up boring for the sheer lack of melody and variety between the songs. My respect for Bathory's viking metal work ends at its influence upon other bands in the genre.
Maybe work on your attention span or something...

I don't like Einherjer that much, and can't recall the sound of that album - but if you're looking for punkish sounding stuff, try Glittertind.
