Vote: Royal Carnage 2006 March Madness - Sweet 16

Sure they were. But Ulver makes more challenging, more interesting and better music. If we used your qualifications, why even include bands from the 1990s?

By your logic, why even include bands from the seventies or eighties? It's not like they're relevant anymore...

Judas Priest are a fun band, but they never created a work of art. Ulver did that with Bergtatt. Case closed.
Ahaha. "Heavy Metal" is not art eh? Pretentious artfaggotry at it's best.

Living in the fuckin' past, I'm telling you! I'm not denying that they were once ahead of their time, but Priest hasn't done anything relevant in the same period when Ulver has consistently reinvented and challenged themselves (and damn those who disown everything but the first three)...unless inspiring the likes of Primal Fear counts. Nice one, Rob!

You are accusing others of "living in the fuckin' past" and you choose time frames to justify your choice ("Priest hasn't done anything relevant IN THE SAME PERIOD when Ulver bla bla"). By the way, what "challenged" themselves, just because they decided not to play any metal anymore but copy trip hop bands, Coil and Dead Can Dance, makes them suddenly "oh challenging and reinventing"? And Judas Priest were releasing Painkiller when Pink Floyd did nothing, lolerz, what is your point?
By the way Primal Fear was not the only band that J.P. inspired, you know.

Comparing J.P. to Ulver is funny. J.P. created countless heavy metal masterpieces and really timeless music. Ulver just wrote some awesome material, that is really NOT as innovative and groundbreaking as "Sad Wings Of Destiny" was in 1976. Choose Ulver, it's alright , but don't justify it with silly reasons, or try to say to others that it was silly to choose J.P. because "oh man you know Ulver used beats and tried to make something significantly different".

Absolutely irrelevant, not even my argument at all.

LOL at how seriously some people are taking this

Yeah and then you went on to use someone elses, because if you look back he isn't arguing about relevance.

He said "living in the past", as if it is a bad thing. By that logic, all bands from the seventies and eighties are no longer relevant, especially compared to these new and trendy techno bands, such as Ulver.

Have this forum been bitten by the dumb-bug today or what?

He said Tully was 'living in the past' for wanting to not include bands from the 90's, how does that possibly equal 'all bands from the seventies and eighties are no longer relevant'? He made no mention of relevance, he was saying that if you completely ignore new bands you are living in the past.

People who vote Priest over Ulver are stuck in the past and are allowing nostalgia to cloud their judgement
I guess this depends on two things:

1. Are you voting based on strength of discography or on strength of last few discs?

2. Do you like Priest and not like Ulver?

I fall into this second group. While I'll readily admit, Priest hasn't made a decent disc since 1990's "Painkiller", I've never heard anything by Ulver that I enjoyed.

This tournament seems like it's flying by.
Yeah. It seems th1t people are in a hurry to get to the end. Last year, we let each round run for like 5 days. We chatted about something on Friday night, that I'll start up when this concluded, that I think people will have a ton of fun with.

There also haven't been any tough choices for me and the band choice overall seems a little bland compared to last year...
It's random, so depending on your individual tastes, I think it's going to be hit or miss, with each year, as to how tough matchups are for you.

Exactly. I was merely taking it one step further, because that "living in the past" arguement just doesn't hold water, on any level.

When one is comparing them on an "importance" level, one has to has to think: Was Judas Priest more important in the seventies and eighties than Ulver was in the nineties. I think the answer is simple, as does anyone who isn't gay.
